Mark Rylance was reportedly dissatisfied during shooting due to historical inaccuracy.
Anne Boleyn was hardly the quickly discarded failure that she is portrayed as. She had over 250 personal servants, and a reputation as a lavish spender. Several important people were executed because they didn't like her.
Initially, the movie characterizes Mary as innocent and morally upright. She had spent time in France, and was reputed to have had several affairs. One reason Henry only wanted Mary as a mistress was because he considered her a whore.
One month before filming began, Natalie Portman began daily classes to master the English accent under dialect coach Jill McCullough.
Keira Knightley was attached to this project for a long time. Eventually, she dropped out.
Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson say that their costumes were vital to knowing their character. Their dresses gave them good posture, and the colors helped represent their personality. Anne's bold and simple colors show that she wants a main goal. Mary's softer and much more complicated dress design shows that she is a more modest person and tries to be herself.
The necklace that Anne wears (the string of pearls with a B and 3 tear drops) is the same necklace worn in Inetu Betty (2006).
In the film Anne calls Mary her younger sister, however, it is believed that Mary was the older sister to Anne. There is no official birth date recorded for Mary, but most historians suggest that she was the eldest of the three surviving Boleyn children. Evidence suggests that the Boleyn family treated Mary as the eldest child.
Mark Rylance, who plays Anne and Mary's father Thomas Boleyn, also portrayed Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall. Thomas Cromwell served Henry VIII and played a large role in Anne's arrest and subsequent beheading.
One exterior shot shows Penshurst Place as Anne Boleyn's family home. She actually grew up at Hever Castle in Kent.
Jessica Biel and Emma Bell auditioned for the role of Mary Boleyn.
This is TV director Justin Chadwick's first feature film.
Five of the film's actors had either portrayed or went on to portray a Marvel comic book character. Eric Bana played the title character in Hulk (2003), Andrew Garfield played Spider-Man in Imeline Ämblikmees (2012) and Imeline Ämblikmees 2 (2014), Natalie Portman played Jane Foster in both Thor (2011) and Thor: Pimeduse maailm (2013), Scarlett Johansson has played Black Widow in Raudmees 2 (2010), Tasujad (2012), Kapten Ameerika: Talvesõdalane (2014), Tasujad: Ultroni ajastu (2015), and Kapten Ameerika: Kodusõda (2016), and Benedict Cumberbatch played the title character in Doktor Strange (2016).
Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch have both played Dr. Stephen Hawking.
Scarlett Johansson and Kristin Scott Thomas also played daughter and mother in The horse whisperer.
Eric Bana and Benedict Cumberbatch have both played a villain in the re-booted Star Trek film series. Bana played Nero in Star Trek (2009), while Cumberbatch played Khan in Otse pimedusse (2013).
Scarlett Johansson and Benedict Cumberbatch would later go on to play Black Widow and Dr Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The love letter that Mary reads to herself says, "My heart and I surrender themselves into your hands." This is an actual quote from the real letter, but the letter was to Anne, not Mary.
Elizabeth was about 3 years old when her mother was beheaded.
Anne was originally sentenced to be burned to death but that was later "upgraded" to beheading. While her brother was seen executed by axe, we see Anne beheaded by a sword. That is because a queen wasn't to be executed with the common axe. She was given the respect of beheading by an expert swordsman brought in from France.
In a deleted scene, Anne was shown to have taken on the role as ward to Mary's son out of obligation to Henry. In the film, ironically, Mary is shown to have take a guardian role over Anne's daughter, Elizabeth, out of love.
Mary Boleyn's first husband, William Carey, died of the sweating sickness in 1528. She secretly married William Stafford in 1534, and was banished from the royal court because Stafford was considered beneath her station.
