This is the story of United States currency, how it started and how it has changed over the years. Mainly, though, it's about how coins and bank notes (more commonly known as "bills") are made.

Making coins and dollar bills is a complicated chore, as Modern Marvels demonstrates to us here., especially the paper money. I can't believe all the steps it takes to make all these "bank notes." They didn't cover everything about the process, either, as they admit they are not about to help the counterfeiters out there watching!

They also admit "there is no such thing as a counterfeit-proof note,"and that the crooks will always find a way if you give them enough time. They cite a recent example of bogus $100 bills which led them all the way to North Korea!! This is why, the narrator of this show points out, the U.S. re-designs its bills every seven years......to slow down the counterfeiters.

The elaborate "watermarks" and "security threads," the kind of paper and engraving techniques are all shown here. It was interesting to hear that the paper money you are walking around with is mostly made of the same denim that you're wearing on your lower body!!

As for coins, the part most memorable, at least to me, was to see them first as "blanks." Seeing millions of brand-new "mint" coins being made was a pretty sight. Those things are beautiful until we get our grubby hands all over them! The history of the coins was pretty fascinating, too. It took three years to make the first million coins in this country, back in the Founding Fathers day. Now, we we can make billions in one day.

    Good show, and recommended.
