According to Bill Murray, he considered retiring after doing this film because he felt that it was the best acting performance he could ever give.
Jim Jarmusch asked each of the four female leads to write a version of the pink letter from the point of view of their respective characters. He used a combination of those four letters in the film.
Bill Murray agreed to do the film on the condition that he would not have to travel more than an hour from his home in Hudson Valley, New York. Jim Jarmusch agreed and all scenes were filmed in either New York or northern New Jersey.
Jim Jarmusch finished the script in two and a half weeks.
This project's working title was "Dead Flowers", a possible reference to a song on The Rolling Stones album "Sticky Fingers".
Sun Green is also the name of a young girl featured in the Neil Young album "Greendale". Jim Jarmusch is a big fan of Neil Young.
Bill Murray and Jessica Lange co-starred together in Tootsie (1982).
The opening credits mention that this movie is dedicated to Jean Eustache. He was a French film director, who killed himself at the age of 41, just after finishing the french classic " La Maman et la Putain" from 1973. The story from that classic is also about a womanizer, comparable to the story of "Broken Flowers".
Although they don't share a scene in this film, Frances Conroy and Jessica Lange would become cast mates and work closely years later in the TV series American Horror Story (2011).

Jim Jarmusch: [putting on a burnt CD in car while driving] Don Johnston puts on a home-burnt CD (given to him by Winston) every time he rides a car. In Ghost Dog - Der Weg des Samurai (1999), Ghost Dog puts on music from a home-burnt CD every time he rides a car.
Homer Murray: Bill Murray's son has a quick role at the very end of the film. He looks into the camera as the car he is in passes by.
There is an Easter egg in the scene where Don (Bill Murray) is sitting at the café near his home talking with Winston: when Winston leaves, there is a postcard visible on the café's wall with a bird on it - the same bird featured in the letter that Don receives at the beginning of the film.
