Short summary

Ethan McGowan, an elderly man in his nineties, is interviewed by his grandson Ronnie who is writing his grandfather's biography. Ronnie gets more than he bargained for when Ethan tells a story of life, love, loss, friendship, and the unbreakable bond of blood. Coming of age in Northwest Louisiana, a young Ethan McGowan becomes a successful boxer during the Great Depression, falls in love with the beautiful Savannah, faces the horrors of World War II, and takes on the Ku Klux Klan. Through it all, Ethan is shaped by his family and his best friend Johnny, an African-American man he has known and defended since childhood. Ethan and his family endure through the tragedy of loved ones lost, the ignorance of racism, and the hard times brought by war, society, and the frailty of man.
