The farm where the Pingwings lived was owned by Peter Firmin's family

The idea for the series came when Oliver Postgate saw a small knitted penguin which Gloria Firmin, Peter Firmin's sister had made for Josie Firmin, her niece, and Peter's daughter. Oliver was reminded of a type of French wool called Pingouin, and a series idea was hatched.
