Short summary

Frank skips the subtlety while interrogating Micro. Brutal memories of top-secret missions shed light on Frank's past.

The words on the scrabble board in the tent in Kandahar are: die, tits, swarm, armor, fubar, murderous, intent.

The joke that Billy Russo made about Ann Margret is the same joke made by Pvt. Joker on Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, a film that is also about marines.

David Lieberman's password is "Zach@ndLeo" which are the names of his kids.

Ben Barnes' character, Billy Russo, is reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde in the bunk scene. In 2009, Barnes played Dorian Gray in the film Dorian Gray (2009). Both characters parallel the other, as both spends value in his good looks.

The name of the operation Frank Castle is a part of in Kandahar is named "Operation: Cerberus." Jon Bernthal was the character model for Cerberus in the 2003 video game, Manhunt.

Tim Guinee plays Major Allen in Iron Man and Iron Man 2, but plays a different character in this episode.

As Frank (Jon Bernthal) clears the building towards the end, the song 'Wish it were true' plays on the soundtrack. Several scenes reference the lyrics of this song: Micro (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) and Frank are both 'lost outside' and 'out in the cold'; Frank and Micro are both trying to 'Find a way back home, [to] make everything new' (Frank also references the need to get home to see a Springsteen concert shortly before he breaches the building); Frank says 'There's no pain' when interrogating Micro; after the interrogation of Ahmad Zubair (Shez Sardar) Frank is 'digging a grave'. The scene ends before the song reaches the verse 'Country, I was a solider for you; I did what you asked me to; It was wrong and you knew'; shortly after, Frank discovers Operation Cerberus had no Congressional authority.

John Berthal worked in the animation department for the video game Manhunt (2003) on a character model called "Cerberus", the same name as the secret operation he was a part of in Afghanistan.

John Bernthal and Jaime Ray Newman played husband and wife in the show, Eastwick.

Frank casually calls Billy Russo 'Billy the Beaut'. In the comics he has that as his mob nickname before becoming the villan Jigsaw.

When Curtis describes Russo as "a man of wealth and taste" (the same words Satan uses to describe himself in The Rolling Stones' song Sympathy for the Devil,) Russo's head tilts towards the crucifix in the background but he can't quite look at it, foreshadowing his antagonistic role later in the series.

"Kandahar" is one of the darkest episodes in this series. It is mostly centered in Frank's memories of his team in Afganistan. What I love about this series is the character development, perhaps a bit slow for some, but for me, it is done perfectly as you'll see in "Kandahar". We got to meet a new character, David Lieberman, a hacker who calls himself "Micro". We got to know more about him, as to why he is interested on Frank, as both stories are connected. Also, in this episode we're introduced to what seems to be another new character who looks that gonna be important here. All in all, "Kandahar" is one of the best episodes in the season, very dark and interesting as I said above, due to new characters development. And let me tell you something, it ends with one of the best fight scenes I've seen since Daredevil. So, as you see, you will not be disappointed.

I really like how this series is going, and seems we are just beginning the journey.

Well, it wasn't as bad as Shooter on USA when it comes to boring military drama, but this was not a strong episode. The flashbacks felt forced and it was predictable the parallel they were trying to draw between what happened back then and what was happening now.

Still waiting for everything to start clicking with this show.

The scenes trying to develop characters falls short. It attempts to be intellectual, but it falls short. The plot and innuendos fall short. Basically, it is boring dialogue that leads up to the Punisher getting angry and killing people.
