Short summary
Originally intended to be photographed in 3-D and to be titled "Man-Killer."
Average Shot Length = ~8 seconds. Median Shot Length = ~8.4 seconds.
Final film of veteran director D. Ross Lederman (although he did not direct but served as Associate Producer).
Produced by John Wayne through his Wayne-Fellows production company. Wayne managed to persuade William A. Wellman to do over $100,000 worth of re-shoots for a percentage of the profits.
As movies are usually filmed a full year before they're released, when real-life marquees are shown they're of a previous year's film: In this case, along the parade street, a theater marquee has Otto Preminger's The Moon Is Blue (1953) on it.
Author Mickey Spillane appears as himself, and Marian Carr is in the cast. Two years later, she'd appear in Kiss Me Deadly, an adaptation of a Spillane novel centering on his most famous character, Mike Hammer.
This film is a John Wayne production; two years earlier, Sean McClory was in The Quiet Man starring John Wayne.
Most movies back then didn't have the villain as the main (central) character (especially not a psychopath), but Sean McClory fits that bill here; although technically, he's fourth billed in the credits. And the first two credited actors weren't actors, but were famous for other things: Clyde Beatty as a Circus Owner/Lion Tamer and Mickey Spillane an author: both playing themselves.
