A small group of Islanders learn that 240 acres of forest in the center of their island is for sale. They try a number of approaches to convince the State Legislature and the State Department of Natural Resources to conserve the forest as public property. They are unsuccessful. Finally they realize they will need to buy the forest to save it, but they don't have the money. They learn that the local Park District can take a bond levy to the voters but, the Park District has brought a number of proposals to the voters in the past and failed. They will have to persuade their fellow citizens to tax themselves to buy the land. They mount a campaign to bring the options before the community and when election day comes, 82% of the voters say "yes" to a bond levy. That day marks the manifestation of a new land ethic on the island. Since then other properties have been added to the public park district.
