The animated film is based on the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, created in 1837.

Without the "Little Mermaid" the world would become much poorer and, it seems, the human soul would become poorer and drier.

The film ends with the words of a guide completing his story: "This is a very sad, dear ladies and gentlemen, a story very sad and very beautiful! This is a story about love, which knows no obstacles, about courage and kindness. "

The song of the little mermaid, "Your poor ship is gone into the sea", by lyrics of Aleksandr Galich was sung by the well-known chamber singer Viktoriya Ivanova.

The film uses a fragment of "Toccata and Fugues in D minor (BWV 565)" by Johann Sebastian Bach.

In the animation, a photo collage was used as a technological innovation in the manufacture of backgrounds.

In the 1980s in the USSR, the film was published on VHS videotapes by the video company Goskino USSR Video Program in the collection of cartoon fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen.

In the early 2000s, the animated film was restored and released on DVD by the companies Krupniy Plan and Soyuz Video in the collection of fairy tale cartoons by Hans Christian Andersen.

The animated film was released on MPEG-4 discs.

In Russia, since the beginning of the 1990s, it was released on VHS videotape by the Close-up film association, in 1995-2000-ies together with the Video World company in the cartoon collection.
