The League of Nations put the British in charge of Palestine on the understanding that a Jewish homeland would develop there. But while entire Jewish communities were being wiped out in Nazi-occupied Europe, the British closed off the ports of Palestine to Jewish refugees. American sailors volunteered to defy the blockade, and of all the refugees who slipped past the British, nearly half came on ten largely American-manned vessels. Some of the sailors reminisce in this brief movie; their lifesaving adventure at a telling moment in history was clearly a high point in their own life stories. Also interviewed is one of the British officers, and authentic footage from Meyer Levin's documentary THE ILLEGALS is mixed in. At less than an hour, the film is more a glimpse than a full narrative, but there is a book, THE JEWS' SECRET FLEET, that tells somewhat more of the story.
