On the audio commentary for the dvd release of this episode, Bruce W. Timm personally storyboarded the showdown between Superman and Darkseid, because he felt he knew these characters well enough, and he knew how much they despised each other, and it would only work properly if that energy and emotion was captured properly on paper first.

Also, Superman's quest for acceptance, forgiveness and trust in the aftermath of Darkseid's manipulation, would leave lasting consequences that set up various story arcs and themes in "Justice League" (2001).
