Choose Connor was quite a surprise - even for a 2 hour movie, it managed to stay interesting throughout. I didn't see where it was going early, and the tone shifted considerably towards the end of the film.

While I understand that the point is to show Owen's disbelief in what he has learned, to end the movie with literally nothing disappointed me greatly. Why spend all that time building up to it if there is no resolution? I guess the point is that we're supposed to believe that Owen will find a way to do something after the events in the film. I personally didn't come out of this with a sense of hope, more a sense of dismay that more could've been done with this film, and more could've been shown. I'm certainly not suggesting that Owen could've somehow 'beat the system' necessarily, but to not even show anything and just leave it with...well, nothing, was a cop out in my opinion.

This film would seem to be a testament to the need for tighter screen writing allowing for a more meaningful conclusion.

Everything about "Choose Connor" was top=drawer, especially the script and the very proficient work done by the 21-year-old director, writer, producer Luke Eberl . . . a talented young man from whom to expect great things. All the acting was credible, the dialogue smart, the theme important. Loved it!!!

Saw it at the 2007 Woodstock Film Festival, where it was screened twice and went over tremendously with the audiences. It's more than just a coming of age movie -- this kid learns a hard, heartbreaking lesson about trust, politics and "the system" -- how things really work to suit the personal agendas of those in powerful positions.

I would recommend this movie to anyone with a working brain.

Leaving the theater, my movie-going companion remarked: "It didn't go far enough." I see where he's coming from, but I would summarize a little differently. "Choose Connor" falls into an uncomfortable valley right between going too far and not going far enough.

It purports to tell the story of a bright teenager's fall from innocence, as he gets swept up in the Senate campaign of a local politician, only to discover that the nuts and bolts of our electoral system, and the true character of the candidate himself, don't conform to his young idealism. Rich material, to be sure, with great potential.

Unfortunately, the film falls down on a number of fronts. Primarily, the writer/director doesn't know whether he's making a gritty, true-to-life exposé, or a wild-eyed melodrama.

At times, the script is tight and smart, as in the scene where the teenager is being prepped by the candidate's campaign manager, and is steered away from talking about (or even asking about) specific policy details. In these moments, we believe the characters, and that the situation develops as it might in reality.

At other times, though, the script reaches for shock, as we learn about the traumas of another teen character, a family member of the candidate who carries terrible secrets. In these moments, we don't believe the situation for an instant; the screenwriter is clearly recycling trashy details from other stories (both political thrillers and family dramas), and gives no sense of actual experience in these matters. We simply don't buy it: this isn't how things like this would actually happen.

That kind of lurid excess would be fine, if the rest of the movie were constructed with the same tone. But it's directly at odds with the low-key naturalism of other scenes, which are handled and played with subtlety (e.g., the candidate's offer of assistance in the teenager's father's career). The result is a movie that veers wildly between contradictory elements, until our suspension of disbelief has been whiplashed into oblivion.

This is too bad, because the film wastes a strong performance by Steven Weber as the candidate; he's suitably charming, oily, and slippery, and is convincing as a man with a dark background who has discovered a route to personal safety through deceptive pursuit of power. There's a chilling scene late in the film, showing the candidate fighting tears and appealing for understanding from the teenager across the back seat of the candidate's car, that communicates very plausibly how this kind of manipulative operator might work on a vulnerable target. Sadly, the strong work of Weber and the rest of the cast is lost amid the unbelievable gyrations of the script.

Even worse, the intermittent potential of the script is further quashed by flat direction. Luke Eberl, both writer and director, does himself no favors in the handling of his own script. Lighting and camera-work are dully tedious; visually, the piece looks like a TV movie from the mid-90s. Character blocking is similarly uninspired, with scene after scene lacking necessary vigor. The story takes place in the final weeks of a campaign for U.S. Senate, which should be a whirlwind of activity and background conflict, and yet we watch people floating idly through their speeches and settings as if nothing of importance is at stake. The script needed one more round of firm-handed polish, but even as it stands, its flaws might have been easier to overlook if a better director had established a more appropriately energetic setting and asked the cast to put the emotional accelerator on the floor.

The movie's also unnecessarily coy about its details. The candidate is never identified as belonging to any political party, the specific state whose Senate seat is being contested is not named, and even a couple of clear references to the Iraq debate are cloaked behind the cheesy name of an obviously made-up country. This was probably justified, production-wise, as an attempt to get past partisan specifics and shoot for universality, but it's pretty easy to see past that rationalization and to the creative cowardice of which those choices are symptomatic. A stronger filmmaker would have recognized that universality is achieved through convincing detail, not through maddening vagueness.

The overall feeling of "Choose Connor" is disappointment: a bright, very ambitious filmmaker has reached for significance and import, and we see that he's just not yet capable of pulling it off. He's young and inexperienced, and he's working on material and themes that are simply beyond him. the result is a movie that doesn't know when to pull its melodramatic punches, and simultaneously fails to land critical blows (or doesn't even throw them). It'll be interesting to see how this young filmmaker develops, but there's a great risk that the hubristic overreaching of this project will torpedo his later efforts, and one wonders whether he should have set his sights on a more reasonable goal.

I was amazed at the quality of this film, particularly after seeing pictures of the barely adult director - all 140(?) lbs of him! Truly, a boy directing a movie about a boy. I look forward to seeing more Luke Eberl films.

I did think this one was a bit too long. There was too much time spent showing Connor being unsuccessful (and unwilling) to make a move on Owen. Caleb didn't try hard enough. Owen, being so young, could have easily become closer to Caleb and later decided it wasn't his preference. And Owen would still have learned the "valuable lesson" about corruption and politics. Instead, he didn't give himself a fair chance to learn about his sexuality. And what about poor Caleb? Owen could have been a good influence.

Though the film intends to show Owen as a hero who overcomes perverted corruption, I felt sad for Owen. He was offered the opportunity to have some boy-boy fun with Caleb, who was extraordinarily beautiful. Owen didn't have to go along with the political perversion as offered. But he could have tried to have some fun with Caleb, and still walked away when he wanted. It was clear that Owen was in charge - no one forced him to do anything he didn't want to do. But he could have had more fun, and with a very hot boyfriend, at that.

I hope Luke makes more movies where appealing young characters have more fun.

The plot line is an expose of the under belly of American politics. While the theme seems common, what "makes" the movie is the unconventional way the story is told.

The characters are played with conviction. You feel the innocence of the lead, and his innocence lost. The politician is the prince of double-talk, a real snake.

The camera work is impressive. It affirms the nuances of the acting and dialogue. Ditto for the music.

The story uses a parable-style with vingettes where the message is filled with double-entendres. A very canny strategy by the writer/director. The tension in the storyline is carried through to the last scenes.

The movie was like a good mystery book. Something was "afoot"; you knew it was bad; you didn't know exactly what it could be - you had your suspicions; and when the evil was revealed you let out your breath you hadn't noticed you were holding in. Saddened, shaking your head.

A story well written and well told. 3 cheers to a young writer/director.

Choose Connor is a fairly well-written and -directed and very well-acted movie about an extraordinarily idealistic, isolated and naive 15-year-old boy, whose whole life has been spent studying alone, and who after graduation from middle school almost magically becomes intimately involved in the final month of a high-stakes (for US Senator) political campaign. When he discovers that politics is hypocritical, he becomes huffy and self-righteous and withdraws back into his familiar and idealistic bookish isolation.

That core story is very well done, but many details in the movie are so preposterous that they undermine its overall effectiveness. The totally implausible way he goes overnight from book-bound, middle-school nerd to political operative is absurd, but it's not too hard to accept because what follows is interesting. But when a major subplot of sexual predation rears its horror-movie, cartoonishly demonic and COMPLETELY unbelievable head, the interesting story becomes too ridiculous to accept.

That's too bad. There's enough good in this movie to watch it anyway, as long as you can overlook the preposterous parts.

Over the many years, there are some films that just slip by & hardly anyone views.

Choose Conner is one of those films.

This small gem played at some festivals & had a short 2 week run in a small theatre in West Hollywood making all of about $ 5500.

It is now on DVD I do hope many more will now see this,.

It is a strange drama of a shrewd youngish politician, who influences a very bright 15 year old lad.This politico also has a handsome nephew (about 17 years old) who befriends the 15 year old lad.

Steven Weber (Wings) is our politician,his role is slightly vague,this is another point for the audience to ponder

Alex D.Linz is our 15 year old, He was about 17 when they made this movie, but easily can pass for younger. He has been in films & TV since he was a young child, He is a very good actor & is quite convincing.

Escher Holloway is the older teen, This role is his first major part & he too is excellent.

Now I am saving the best for last, the writer/director,

Luke Eberl is not yet 23 years old. For a first effort a big thumbs up. I do hope he as well as our 2 lads have a long career.

In this election year, where so much idealism is attached to one of the candidates, it is poignant to watch a film that warns us not to make an idol out of anyone running for public office.

Luke Eberl is the writer and director of "Choose Connor". There are significant parts of the film that reveal that he is a 'genius' when it comes to telling stories via the cinema.

Go see this movie before the election and then ponder why and for whom you will cast your vote.

Let you eyes be opened like those of the young protagonist.

A mix of "Citizen Kane", "Advise and Consent" and "Paths of Glory" by a young director as talented as those who made the films listed above.

Apparently based on a true story that's even more depraved than what's portrayed here. This is an superb film. Some of the smartest dialog I've encountered, but it took me watching it twice because the interactions between the characters are so uncomfortable (intentionally so) that a lot of the nuance and depth got washed over by the emotional tension of the film the first time I watched it. Really amazingly done. It also provides I think a very candid look into how the nature of the political process and engender depravity. From what I can tell, this film was very well researched and if anything, has padded the historical facts to make a more believable story, which is pretty astounding.
