Due to the war in ex-Yugoslavia Mustafa and his granddaughter ends as fugitives in different countries, and due to 'paragraph 15' he cannot be reunited with her.

During the war in ex-Yugoslavia professor Mustafa sees too it that his orphaned granddaughter Selma gets out of the country. She ends up in USA, but when he finally gets out he ends up in Denmark. In contact with Selma over the phone and by letters, he becomes desperate to get to US. But he soon realizes that 'paragraph 15' in the Danish law regarding fugitives, will not allow him to leave the country as long as his case is not processed. And this can take years. So as a last resort he listens to an interpreter that tells him to earn money to buy a fake passport and leave Denmark illegally. But even with this plan 'paragraph 15' is still a problem because it states that he is not allowed to work!
