Short summary

Because of his financial trouble, Don Almeda (Noah Beery) promises his daughter, Maria (Barbara Bedford), to Don Alvarez (Albert Prisco). But Maria does not love Don Alvarez, and, in fact, she falls in love with Terry O'Neil (Elliott Sparling), a stranger who has been wounded by robbers associated with Alvarez. O'Neil takes Alvarez's place at a masked ball. Alvarez, in turn, robs the old Padre (John Herdman) of some pearls and stabs him to deal with O'Neil's knife. He then accuses O'Neil of the murder and tries to shoot him, but wounds Maria instead, because she has thrown herself in front of him. Maria recovers, and, after proving that Alvarez is a thief and a killer, weds O'Neil.

World's first 3-D feature film.

The only film released in the two-camera, two-projector Fairhall-Elder stereoscopic (3-D) process developed by Harry K. Fairhall and Robert F. Elder. The premiere was 27 September 1922 at the Ambassador Hotel Theater in Los Angeles.

The film was only publicly shown twice in 3D, once on September 27, 1922 in the Ambassador Hotel Theater in Los Angeles, and only once more in December 1922 at Rivoli Theater in New York City. Following only being shown twice in 3D, the film was acquired by Selznick Distributing Corporation and re-released in 2D in 1923 under the title "Forbidden Lover", which is also presumed lost.

The film utilized the red-and-green anaglyph system for the 3D experience and also gave the audience the option of viewing one of two different endings to the film (in 2D) by looking through only the red or green lens of the spectacles, depending on whether the viewer wanted to see a happy or tragic ending.

According to one reference book, this is the first 3-D movie, not Bwana Devil, which is usually given that honor. So any quiz show that accepts Bwana Devil as an answer is three decades off. (The book is called Great Events of the 20th Century). But then I guess Bwana Devil was the first one to come out during the short-lived 3-D craze of the 50's.
