An instructional video showing how to enter a sushi restaurant and order a meal. Starting with the correct hand gestures to make on entering, this film covers the ordering, eating and paying for a meal in such a traditional establishment.

Filmed completely straight to the point of being accurate, this film also manages to weave an element of sarcasm into the delivery that highlights the absurdity of what it is saying without making it overly obvious at any point. As an instructional video spoof, it is amusing for how on target it is but yet it is not just about drawing laughs so much as making a point. Not overly familiar with Japanese culture, I cannot be 100% sure but there was a heavy dose of criticism of the heavily regimented and traditional rules of Japan and these are brought out in the instructions in the film.

It is put together really well by Kojima, who has a good eye for the design of the film, exaggerating it very slightly to make his point but never to the point of turning the film into an easy spoof. Overall then an enjoyable and interesting film although understandably somewhat of a curio piece.

This short film "The Japanese Tradition: Sushi" was first and, in my opinion the best from the whole series. Not only it features some real traditions, but also makes fun of some stereotypes that only Japanese people from the Western point of view could be labeled as, e.g. exceptional precision or politeness. As for me, who does not know Japanese traditions very well, this film was a total mind-blowing, because of the ironical scenes, which were portrayed so serious and real looking that if you didn't have a clear mind, you would think it is true. Also, the cast is really great at portraying these above mentioned stereotypes. I really enjoyed it - so 10/10.
