The Collegiates (1973) watch online HD

Marking Carter Stevens' debut as director (actually co-director with Robert Josephs), THE COLLEGIATES is a tiresome attempt at sex comedy which might have worked with a soft-core approach and better casting.

Point-of-reference here would be the popular R-rated films of the same period from Crown Intl. Pictures and Roger Corman's New World, which despite their low budgets packed a great deal of entertainment value and which played endlessly at drive-ins.

COLLEGIATES, on the other hand, is rather idiotic and not believable on any level for a minute. Case in point; male lead is Harry Reems, long in the tooth as a college student. With the exception of Kim Pope, whose best work was in soft- core, the female cast is unattractive, especially lead Tanya Ticker. With jokes generally falling flat it's a tough slog to sit through.

Gimmick is that Tickler is a prude, and since the house where all the girls reside on campus has a lease in her name, she bosses them around where males guests/sex is concerned. Pope and pals devise a plan to get Tickler, who is wont to masturbate all the time, deflowered, and that's the movie.

Result merely points of the perils of overreaching in porn, especially during those early days when the feature-length form was just developing. All-sex efforts are appreciated on a far different level than attempts, like THE COLLEGIATES, to make a "real movie", and failure to deliver on the promise of actual entertainment is what we have here.

Horny, but uptight and virginal Georgia Haynes (a solid performance by the gangly, yet still fetching brunette Tanya Tickler) shares an apartment with the loose Kathy (lovely blonde Kim Pope) and the equally uninhibited Leslie (yummy Bertha James). Kathy and Leslie conspire to get Georgia deflowered. Directors Robert Josephs and Carter Stevens, working from a blithely ribald script by Merry Seaman (great pseudonym!), deliver all the expected graphic carnal carnage (fellatio, cunnilingus, group sex, standard copulation, and so on) with a very engaging and positive attitude; there's a surprisingly sweet, good-natured, and even rather innocent sensibility at work throughout which in turn gives this picture a certain happy and upbeat charm. Why, even the inevitable lesbianism is shown in a pleasant and straightforward way. This film further benefits from competent acting from the attractive and appealing cast: Tickler makes for an endearingly gawky lead, Pope and James are both sexy and spirited in their roles, a very young Harry Reems sans his trademark furry mustache contributes a likable turn as amorous hunk Lexington, and Mark Andrews is funny as amiable food freak Michael. C.O. Slavens' fairly polished cinematography boasts a few snazzy fades. John Erics' neatly varied score alternates between pretty, melodic folk and get-down funky grinding soul. Georgia's big going all the way scene is genuinely hot and exciting. An enjoyable hardcore flick.
