At the opening of this picture, a couple are seen in dim outlines, spooning on a park bench. In comes a policeman, armed with a dark-lantern, which he suddenly flashes on the couple. They cease their love-making, in great confusion, and the policeman walks on, but as soon as he is out of sight, the couple commence billing and cooing again. This picture is particularly interesting because of the photographic effect of the sudden flashing of a dark lantern on the couple. It is very cleverly worked out, and the picture has made a big hit wherever it has been shown.

A man and a woman are necking rather passionately. A policeman strolls unconcernedly by.

At 22 seconds, this one was clearly intended for the peep-show machines from the start. Although film makers had wasted little time in making movies suitable for stag parties -- off the top of my head, Melies' APRES LE BAL dated from 1897 -- in America, such stuff was imported, or merely risque -- in 1896, there were cries of immorality when Edison released THE KISS, showing just that from a Broadway play.

The print I looked at, as is common for transfers of 110+-year-old peep-show cards, is hard to make out. It's mildly humorous, more than anything else.

After Dark in Central Park (1900)

This film runs a mere 22 seconds and is supposed to show the naughty side of Central Park when the sun goes down. What we basically see is a man and woman kissing on a park bench when a policeman walks up and shines a light on them. Those hoping to see the 1900 Central Park will be disappointed because this was obviously filmed on a studio set. With that said, there's certainly nothing too entertaining or too bad about this film. It's mainly going to appeal to those who enjoy watching these early films. Outsiide of a curio, there's really not much here. There's certainly nothing here that makes this stand out in America's early cinema history.
