Short summary

The title is derived from a passage by Paul in The First Epistle to the Corinthians.
Ulla Ryghe and Ingmar Bergman spent over two months editing the film. The two would work from 9am until late at night each day, a rigorous process even by Bergman's standards.
Critics in the United States were initially dismissive of the film. A critic from Films in Review suggested that "Bergman may be approaching the end of his vogue." Several years hindsight allowed American critics to warm to the film, which the consensus eventually agreed was a classic.
