Short summary

Alex enlists John's help in containing an outbreak; Donovan learns The Countess' true intentions; Liz and Iris plan to leave the hotel for good.

Liz Taylor's (Denis O'Hare) kimono dress early in the episode, plus the recurring musical theme predominant in the episode, is a clear reference to Kar-Wai Wong's In the Mood for Love (2000).

Frances Conroy, (known for playing Moira O'Hara, The Angel of Death, Myrtle Snow and Gloria Mott is seasons 1-4 respectively), was rumoured to make an appearance in this episode, but does not reappear in AHS until season 6.

Rumoured to be the first episode Lady Gaga and Wes Bentley share a scene together.

In her tribute video, Iris (Kathy Bates) plays "I Hope You Dance". Alfre Woodard sang that song for her at her funeral in The Family That Preys (2008).

In this episode, Donovan (Matt Bomer) kills Finn Wittrock's character, Rudolph Valentino. In an episode of Freakshow, Matt Bomer's character is murdered by Finn Wittrock's character.

From the very first episode, this show set up a season that would be filled with brutality, sex and an interesting, and unpredictable premise. However from that spark of a first episode came along a series of events, much like a domino effect, that made this season so boring and dull that it felt like a chore to watch, that spark that made me invested in this season was nothing but a distant memory.

However this episode redeemed that spark as it fulfilled a satisfying turn for the plot and each of its characters.

Performances from this episode were also top-notch especially from Denis O Hare, Kathy Bates and surprisingly Lady Gaga as doubts from the start of the season were replaced with comfort knowing that she perfectly fits the role of the Countess.

This episode was fun and refreshing and a much, much long awaited improvement from the previous dull episodes.

I did not score a perfect score however as it did struggle with finding a balance of tone throughout the episode as it juggled between horror, romance and at times, comedy.

However despite that this episode was well worth a watch. So even if you are at the brink of wanting to quit this season, simply watch this episode, then decide afterward. Because as for me, I will not be checking out of Hotel Cortez just yet.

    May Contain Spoilers.

First 10 minutes of this episode were so unpredictable that I was certain that this is going to be one hell of an episode. Every moment was enjoyable. Amazing acting by all the casts. This episode shows off the beauty of this show. The extremely irrelevant genre of the song at the end with an extreme twist was what I loved the most. One of the best episodes of not just AHS, but of all the shows I've ever watched. Kudos to the direction.

This episode also leaves a lot of us emotional when Liz meets someone important from her past. And there's a family reunion we all were hoping to see.

short & sweet, this episode was made like a movie. Lady gaga is a much better actress than singer. It reminded me of modern culture in contrast to the way THEY were. It was like Natural born killers when the countess killed the actress and Donovan killed her all time love, the dialogue was superb, and then the ending, when Liz and Iris come crashing thru the doors like mad women, it was totally original and very post-modernly tragic. best episode yet. I am so glad to see the back of John and his not scary at all ten commandment killing (this is what lets the show down, we don't want gore and guts, we want scares and shocks and glamorous tragedy). Thats why Circus was so crap, I actually could not eat whilst watching that, because there was far too much blood & gore in it. Let's hope tonight's Natural Born killers-esque high drama is the way we are heading.
