» » Frieda's Turn (2015)

Short summary

Frieda is a bawdy, outspoken grandma with a lust for life and no boundaries. As Frieda's issue-laden family gathers for her 76th birthday dinner, a "funny story" shines new light on a long buried issue.

Writer/director Jay J. Levy modeled the character of Frieda on his own grandmother, based on events in her life. "Frieda's Turn" is his most personal work to date.

Human and humorous, this character driven film packs many layers of family dynamics into its twelve minutes. In those twelve minutes, the film also achieves a satisfying narrative arc. Although there is certainly enough story-line in Frieda's Turn to merit a longer format, the director does a really nice job of boiling it down to its poetic essence. And combining that essence with some laugh out loud moments. It is tempting to go on about this film, but getting into more specifics would ruin the experience of seeing it for yourself. One last thing that can be said is that it is refreshing to see an "older" woman in a lead role and Leslie Simms as Frieda is fun to watch. See this movie and enjoy it!
