Short summary

'Ramanujan' is a historical biopic set in early 20th century British India and England, and revolves around the life and times of the mathematical prodigy, Srinivasa Ramanujan. Directed by the award-winning filmmaker Gnana Rajasekaran and with an international cast and crew, 'Ramanujan' is a cross-border venture. Considered one of the most romantic stories in the history of mathematics, Ramanujan, a college dropout from a poor family in South India, made extraordinary mathematical discoveries in isolation. He wrote a strange letter filled with theorems and formulas to Prof. Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge, who immediately identified his genius and invited him to England to conduct further research. 'Ramanujan' chronicles the genius' journey across continents and cultures in search of recognition.

While the cast and crew were filming in mathematician Ramanujan's house to maintain the authentic look & feel of the film, they noticed that various students still flock his house to receive blessings from his statue before writing their maths exams, even today.

The British actors in the movie knew there Tamil so fluently that they surprisingly got it bang on in their very first take, however while filming the English scenes, the actors had to do a couple of re-takes to get their lines right.

While filming in the fields of Kumbakonam, each time the crew prepared for the shoot and the cast rehearsed their lines, they would have clear skies, but the moment director Gnana Rajasekaran said "action", it would start raining heavily. This happened five times in a row! Finally, the cast and crew managed to get the scene shot perfectly after a long long wait!

Director Gnana Rajasekaran was contemplating casting Tamil actors R. Madhavan and Prasanna for the role of Ramanujan, however Rajasekaran chose Telugu actor Abhinay Vaddi instead, since he felt that his piercing eyes and nose resembled those of the actual mathematician.

Ramanujan is the first film to have been given permission to be filmed in the famous Sarangapani temple in Kumbakonam. No other film, Tamil or any other language, has been given this privilege before.

Director Gnana Rajasekaran had conducted several workshops for the cast of the movie before the actual shooting began in order to help them get into the skin of the character.

The acting of lead actors are laudable but its the screenplay which is lagging. Many parts of the movie is not chained well which actually creates some confusion. It all lies in how a story is presented on screen. Only in this part, did the director fails but succeeds in bringing the much needed biopic on the genius child of mathematics - Srinivasan Ramanujan.

It is a very good attempt and must watch for all those who wish to know about this genius from Kumbakonam.

Music is a great plus in this movie. No unwanted stuffs are delivered.

Great journey to say! Although flawed, it looks beautiful!
