Short summary

Daniel just wants an honest, sober appraisal of how he kisses. Ale is unconvinced. Is a kiss between friends ever 'just a kiss'?

In 2011, Rob Cavazos appeared in a collection of short plays by Mark Harvey Levine. One of those plays was "The Kiss", upon which "El Beso" is based.

Rob Cavazos and Carlos G. Davila have been friends since childhood. Although they took different paths before both ending up in film, Rob approached Carlos about making "The Kiss" into a short a soon as he had the go-ahead from Mark Harvey Levine (writer). Carlos agreed to co-produce the film with Rob, as well as direct it, within minutes of reading the script.

Despite having never met, Mark Harvey Levine and Rob Cavazos hit it off after Rob wrote a song based on one of Mark's short plays for a stage production of "Cabfare for the Common Man", a collection of Mark's short plays.

Ana González Bello and Rob Cavazos created a back story for each of their characters, both individually and in relation to one another. In order to keep their reactions as spontaneous as possible once the cameras were rolling, they agreed not to discuss what they felt to be their characters' true feelings and motivations before shooting.

Having spent his entire professional career as an actor in the UK, Rob Cavazos came up with the idea of shooting "El Beso" as a Mexican short in Spanish so he could fulfill his dream of someday working in his native Mexico.

If you say "beer can" with an English accent it also sounds like you're saying "bacon" with a Jamaican accent. About an hour of "El Beso" shooting time was wasted by cast and crew joking about this.

Carlos G. Dávila and Rob Cavazos financed the entire production themselves. All the cast and crew worked either for free or for a reduced fee.

Ana González Bello was the first and only choice for the role of Ale. Carlos G. Dávila agreed to cast her, sight-unseen, on Rob Cavazos' recommendation.

Although both are Mexican, Ana González Bello and Roberto Cavazos both trained in London. He graduated from East 15 Acting School (2005) and she from Drama Centre (2012).

Ana González Bello met Rob Cavazos after she'd seen him in a production of Lope de Vega's "Fuente Ovejuna" in London. It was only when she met the actors in the bar afterwards that she realized Rob was Mexican. They kept in touch afterwards and became friends, which led to her being cast in "El Beso".

Carlos G. Dávila, Daniel Alanis and Daniel Livas were in the same year at school, with Rob Cavazos two years above them and Rudy Martínez one below.

Winner of both Best Short and the Audience Award at Wimbledon International Short Film Festival in July 2014.
