In the American Civil War, two soldiers have deserted the Confederate Army.

After having deserted the Confederate Army in the final months of the American Civil War, John and Nathan find themselves being hunted by the Home Guard. Their journey back home becomes perilous as Nathan's symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder begin to worsen. The pair contemplate how their actions will be perceived and soon realize that they may not be accepted back so willingly if they make it back home. John considers killing himself due to a lack of total hopelessness, whereas Nathan remains somewhat optimistic about their future.
