Short summary

New Year's 2000 is approaching, and Spooner Street is preparing for a big holiday bash. When Peter hears about the impending disaster of Y2K, however, he panics and locks the family in the basement. His fears turn out to be well-founded when the world's computer systems go haywire and civilization is destroyed by atomic blasts. After digging out of the rubble, the family decides to travel to the Natick Twinkie factory in the hopes of finding food and building a new town.

This episode was the first appearance of Peter's future nemesis, The Giant Chicken.

Lacey Chabert was originally supposed to voice Meg for 1999. Instead, Mila Kunis voiced Meg in this episode.

First appearance of Tricia Takanawa.

First appearance of live-action scenes.

Syndicated print cuts out the "potato salad" scene and the shot where the abducted man sees Y2k ensue with the aliens.

The Twinkie factory that the Griffins went to in this episode really existed. It was a Wonder Bread factory in Natick, MA. It went out of business and was eventually knocked down to make room for a mall.

This is the first episode to be rated TV-14-VSLD which would be its most common rating, and the only episode Turner Networks rated TV-14-V.

It is shown that Peter gets into long, bloody brawls with a giant chicken named Ernie. Their rivalry originated from a flashback when Ernie gave Peter an expired coupon for a local market.

This is the only episode to be rated PG in the UK (for DVD release; there is no TV content rating system in the UK. Most episodes are rated 15; the rest are 12s.)

Music from this episode is featured on the CD soundtrack album "Family Guy - Movement 1".

In the final scene, Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal reprise their respective Dallas (1978) roles as Bobby Ewing and Pamela Barnes Ewing in a parody of the infamous shower scene from Dallas: Blast from the Past (1986). The following episode, the tenth season premiere Dallas: Return to Camelot: Part 1 (1986), revealed that Bobby's death in Dallas: Swan Song (1985) and all of the events of the ninth season were nothing more than Pam's dream.
