It's the middle of the night... Year Seven slumbers fitfully at the Science Museum, while sleep's the last thing on Lucy's mind as she waits outside the hospital ward. Finally her father comes out, and has to break the devastating news that her mother's died. With nothing more to be done, Lucy and her dad head home. The next day, Saturday, Dennis is with Josh, and Dennis calls Lucy's house, but she doesn't pick up. In Assembly, Mr. Parrott warns the school that Lucy will need understanding in dealing with her loss. At the hospital there's a further shock in store for Mr. Mitchell - he learns that his wife had HIV which resulted in the meningitis. He storms home, and sees Lucy with her mother's earrings, pulls them off - Lucy's ears bleed - and horrified at the potential consequences, bathes Lucy's ears in antiseptic.
