Short summary
There are many references to Blade Runner:
- The band is called "The Replicants";
- The general mission in both is to kill androids who are almost too human;
- There happen to be characters named Leon and Priss in both;
- Both feature a huge, pyramid-shaped building.
A duty roster that appears in episode 8 reveals that the AD Police apparently employed many of the artists who worked for Marvel Comics during the 1980s.
Episodes 5 and 6 take the Blade Runner resemblance to the breaking point and feature the exact same story, with some of the scenes copied almost verbatim; and even some of Vangelis's score is stolen. (specifically "MegaTokyo 2032")
Early in episode three, a computerized map of Megatokyo appears. It is heavily annotated in English, using the names of actors and characters who appeared in Top Gun (1986) and Aliens.
The series was originally planned, according to some sources, to be 13 episodes long. However, due to contractual obligations, specifically for Kinuko Ômori, the seijuu (voice actor), Priss's character was originally written to be killed during episode 6: Red Eye's, but Ms. Omori's contract was extended. The heavy beating Priss receives in this episode is mostly from the original plans for Priss's death. This would also have changed episode 7: Double Vision, as it is rumored that Vision would have taken Priss's place among the Knight Sabers. In fact, in episode 8: Scoop Chase, a clip of a Robocop-like spoof shown during the episode shows a brief glimpse of Vision in the hardsuit she would have worn. The series was cancelled after eight episodes, though sources say that Bubblegum Crash! was a compilation of the events planned in those last five episodes.
In episode 7, the movie showing in the drive-in appears to be a remake of Robocop, with Vision playing the part of Murphy.
Episode 5 begins with a group of androids escaping from a space colony and heading towards Earth. This was based on the original beginning of Blade Runner, which was scripted but never shot.
The scene in episode 6, where Largo shoots Quincy and discovers that he's an android, was a reference to a scene in Blade Runner which was scripted but not shot. After Roy killed Tyrell, he discovered that he was a replicant. The real Tyrell had been critically wounded in an accident, and was in cryogenic suspension.
In 'Tinsel City' AKA 'Bubblegum Crisis Episode One', the 'Konya Wa Hurricane' sequence at the club is a homage to Streets Of Fire (1984). The dance moves and the music is performed exactly the same way in the first 10 minutes of the Movie. And this movie, as well as Bubblegum Crisis, both feature characters named 'Raven'; additionally, Bubblegum Crisis has a character named "Madigan", while Amy Madigan is a featured performer in Streets Of Fire.
The logo of AIC, the studio that animated the BGC, appears throughout the series' run. The logo even appears on Priss' motorcycle helmet in episode 2.
Sylia's father, Dr. Katsuhito Stingray, is named after series director Katsuhito Akiyama.
In epidose 1, an AD Police officer is looks at a boomer through the HUD display in his helmet. Messages written in English flash on the HUD. On the lower-left hand of the screen reads "KING OF BEER BUDWEISER". On the upper right-hand corner, there is "ST. LOUIS, MO. USA JAP".
When Sylvia whacks Mackie with a newspaper for ogling at her cleavage, the Japanese words "ecchi" and "sukebe" flash on the screen for 1/30th of a second. Both words can mean "pervert".
Character designer Kenichi Sonoda left the series around episode 5, and artists Satoshi Urushihara and Hiroaki Gôda took over the character design duties. Sonoda would eventually return to Artmic and work on episode 8.
"Vampire Hunter D" Illustrator Yoshitaka Amano was originally considered for the character designer position on BGC, but he turned it down because he did not want to design mecha.
In "Revenge Road", Nene searches an AD Police computer for all of the owners of Griffons in Mega-Tokyo. Among the names is famed Japanese composer 'Ryuichi Sakamoto'.
In Revenge Road, Priss's display shows the name "Madonna" and lists some of her singles.
