Short summary

Can true love change the heart of even a hardened criminal? This is the question thrown at the audience in 'Vidiyumvarai Kaathiru'. Raja (Bhagyaraj) is a hardened criminal, forever plotting to usurp the property of others. He comes to Ooty and wins the confidence of Rajshekar, a rich businessman. Rajshekar develops so much faith in Raja that he gets him married to his own mentally unstable daughter Satya (Satyakala) and bequeaths all his property in her name. He also adds a clause that in case Satya meets with her death, then all the property would go to Raja. Raja plots and makes several attempts to kill Satya, but always fails. At last, he comes to know that all along, Satya has been aware of his plans. She now begs him to surrender to the police as she is in the family way. Does Raja have a change of heart? Does he surrender or does he kill her and run away with her property?

This is one of the very under-rated thrillers ever made, possibly many are not aware of this movie too. K Bhagyaraj fittingly places Ilaiyaraaja's name at the very start of the title credits, and the maestro, as usual, provides a superb rousing score that completely conveys the whole story. In fact, the background score perfectly complements the vision of the director, especially the initial scenes involving the hero and rich man, hero enters the bungalow (eerie music indeed!), murder and the chilling train chase sequence. Top class stuff. The flashback is crisp. Sangili Murugan, Karate Mani and the rich man make a mark. On the downside, some scenes are unclear whether the events happen day or night. But, the movie is definitely worth a watch for Bhagyaraj and Ilaiyaraaja.....

This one of the best piece of K.Bhagyaraj taken those days with the least technology available in Tamil movie industry. He managed to run the thrilling story with interesting knot like a novel. Music was Not filling the thrilling gap but the movie making and K.Baghyaraj's screen play makes you wonder how would that be possible with every logical reasons. Bring you to the corner of the seat in most scenes Especially chasing the train after he tried shooting his wife.This movie goes in fast mode with superb thrilling after he tries to kill his wife from a hill station. The flashback scenes were sharp and crisp for delivering the reason of why his wife become mentally disordered. A definite Hollywood quality movie in Tamil !!

This is one of the few films where Bhagyaraj plays a negative role. As always, it is his screenplay that manages to hold your attention, at least for a while. Okay thriller considering the period it was made in (early 80s). Ilayaraja's music disappoints.
