Mrs. Barton, rich and snobbish, writes her poor sister that she will give the latter's daughter, Jennie, a home with her. Jennie, a beautiful, happy creature, does not care to go, but her parents, realizing the opportunity, insist and Jennie, with heavy heart, leaves for her new home. Arrived, the Barton's coldness, formality and artificiality, chill and stun her and she longs for her humble home. One night, at a reception given in honor of the noble Barry Lee, Mrs. Barton insists that Jennie wear one of Flora's cast-off gowns, and Jennie, obeying, makes a ridiculous appearance. The guests secretively laugh and twit her and file into the ballroom, leaving her alone, After the first sting of the humiliation has passed, Jennie rebels, dresses herself in one of her simple, home-made dresses, descends again to the drawing room and makes a complete conquest of all the men and especially Barry Lee, whom Flora hopes to win. Lee makes love to Jennie, but she, believing him engaged to Flora, ...
