Since no one's commented on this game yet, here I go.
First, lemme get my recollections about the original out of the way. Sure, it was easier to scroll left, but you're basically playing against yourself, so why cheat? I'm not saying I never did that, but wasn't it more of a challenge to land on the crocs' heads jumping right? And wasn't snagging a vine cooler if you were going the right way? And if you went left, surely you took the underground shortcuts. Never mind the gold bars you skipped over, right? What was the point, really, of this game as a whole? There was no end, no princess to rescue or anything. Still, the journey sure was fun even if there was no destination.
Okay, on to II. All good sequels expand the premise of the original instead of just rehashing it, and this is no exception. Instead of a futile, existential quest for capitalistic wealth, Pitfall II actually has an ending - one that puts no value on a high score.
The object of the game is just to get to the end. You can fall in a river and be tagged by adversaries, but you can't die. How refreshing that death isn't a factor. So go ahead and leap across canyons to get that diamond ring; the worst that can happen is that you'll be transported back to the last home base you reached.
It'll take you many hours to get to the end, but when you do get there you'll do the happy dance. And, really, isn't that all we all want?

Sure you could win Raiders of the Lost Ark, but realistically could a child under ten figure out all the random things you had to do to win that game? I sure the heck could not. You could also win E.T., but that game just sucked so who cares if you win that one. This one is the sequel to the fun Pitfall game where you ran to the left or right and collected treasure. Here you enter a very, especially considering the system, complex mining system on your quest to find a diamond ring, a cat like creature and a girl. If you watched the cartoon you would know who the girl and cat were as they were characters in the cartoon. Well, in this one you have to find these tree items and in this one you have a lot of things to avoid to make it to said targets. You get to ride a balloon, you can swim in an underground river and do many other things to reach your targets in this one. If you get all the targets you win, and Harry jumps for joy. Granted, the ending is not going to blow you away, but at least it does end because to be honest, the high score stuff never really did it for me. I prefer an end to the quest rather than, "Oh, I made the scoreboard flip over!" This game came near the end of the Atari run as it was just about finished thanks to the horrid E.T. game. It amazes me how one mistake on one game could cost a company and the entire video game industry such a huge wound. This game for me though was one of the best they ever put out for Atari as it was a very varied game.
