Short summary

Professor Indiana Jones teaches two young boys to appreciate the history of art while visiting a museum be recalling his youth. He tells them how his father, Henry Jones Sr, was invited to give lectures all over the world in 1908, and, taking his wife and son along, invites his former tutor Helen Seymour to teach young Henry Jr. during the trip. On their first stop in Cairo, Egypt Junior, who prefers to be called 'Indy' and Miss Seymour were invited to join an archaeological dig by another former student of hers,T.E. Lawrence (who prefers to be called 'Ned'). There a man is killed and a priceless headpiece is stolen. Indiana finally caught up again with this jackal shaped artifact in 1916, after getting himself involved in the Mexican revolution while crossing the border with his cousin Frank. Having joined up with Pancho Villa, Indy became fast friends with Remy Baudouin, another revolutionary who originally hails from Belgium.

The events of this episode are referenced in Indiana Jones y el reino de la calavera de cristal (2008), when Indy tells Mutt that he once rode with Pancho Villa.

In the "Mexico, March 1916" section, Sean Patrick Flanery rides Tornado, the horse Harrison Ford's used in Indiana Jones y la última cruzada (1989).

Mike Moroff, who plays Pancho Villa, had a personal connection to the part: his grandfather actually rode with Villa, and his aunt received love letters from the legendary revolutionary (which Moroff eventually inherited).

When Indiana arrives at the Egyptian dig site, he passes a group of diggers. The work song they sing is the same that the diggers that Indiana employs in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" sing when they are digging for the Well of the Souls.

When Lucasfilm started to release the Las aventuras del joven Indiana Jones (1992) on video in chronological order, the two halves that make up this pilot were separated (and the framing sequences featuring George Hall as Old Indy deleted). The second half, featuring Sean Patrick Flanery as 16 year old Indy (Mexico 1916) was paired with Las aventuras del joven Indiana Jones: Princeton, February 1916 (1993) and released on video as Chapter seven: The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Spring Break Adventure (1999) in 1999. The first half (Egypt, 1908), with Corey Carrier as 9 year old Indy, became Capter One _Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: My First Adventure, The (1999) (V)_, accompanied by an unscreened adventure set in Tangiers. This chapter was finally released October 23 2007 on the first disc of The Adventures of Indiana Jones Volume I DVD box.

Jonathan Hales's teleplay was adapted by comic book writer/artist Dan Barry as issues 1 and 2 of Dark Horse's 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' 12 issue limited series, published February 01, 1993 and March 01, 1992.

The shot of 17 year old Indy finds himself surrounded by a ring of horses is a composite shot. Ten horses where used on location and filmed in three different set-ups to form a circle.

Vic Tablian also featured in En busca del arca perdida (1981) again playing two roles.

In the series opener, "The Curse of the Jackal", the old Indy reveals when and where he was born: July 1, 1899 in New Jersey.

In the pilot episode, Miss Seymour says to Henry Jr. that the Sphinx was built "around 2500 B.C." truthfully, there's great dispute about this, and nobody really knows exactly when the Sphinx was built. However, one should not consider this a continuity error, as it's in-keeping with the available knowledge of Egyptian history in 1908.
