Short summary

Ananth a man of ideals commits a crime and looks for a man called Adarsh (Ideal). Ananth's guilty consciousness and his psychological state blur the line between reality and illusion. Sometimes he is unaware of what's happening in his life. As a parallel, Siddarth, a killer by profession wants to quit his job and be a free man. To be a free man he has to kill one more man. Who is that man whom he has to kill? Does he kill him? These questions pose symbolic questions such the confusions about identity of modern man. Thus, the movie narrates the story through colors and imagery. The movie deals with present day man's confusion about what to do (in life) and how to do in a symbolic way.

Which came first, the disturbing or the disturbed, the present or the future? This is a difficult film for me to assay. I'd say this is one of the few Indian movies that left me mystified when I walked out of cinema hall. I have to give this movie credit for coming out of nowhere to give us something like Kannada audience have never seen before, but that doesn't mean that we will like it.

Sometimes there is a fine balance between art and pretension and, for me, this movie weighs in on the pretension side. The sole reason would be lacking appeal shown by the actors, lot of scenes were a turn off for the eye and mind. The music sucked and it didn't accompany the emotion of the script.

I know Independent film-making is a challenge and sometimes filmmakers have to deal with twaddle actors and unsubstantial budget. So I'm not surprised that Varthamana gets a slating. But hey, this is an important outing for Kannada cinema as its the 1st movie which justifies the tag 'surreal avant-garde experimental film' and for the inquiring Kannada minds that worship Lynch, Fukui, Jodorowsky, Ishii, Nikolaidis, Teshigahara, Svankmajer, Tarr, Majewski & Lauzon you may dig this movie.

If you want predictable narrative structure, please don't give it a go. A word of caution though. This one really requires patience. You need to immerse yourself into its vortex. What works here is the story and congrats to Umesh Amshi for the research he has put in to create this film with beleaguered leads. I hope it gets a decent screening at festivals around the world and sure to land in French theaters soon or at the shelves of video stores for the DVD cinephiles.

The movie is very strange. The scenes are really confusing and not even related to one another. I didn't understand even one percent of what this movie is about and was left completely blank at the end. I didn't expect this from a movie starring Sanchari Vijay who has won accolades in his previous films. Completely disappointed by this movie. I seriously doubt if even one person who has watched this movie will be able to understand it!
