Short summary
Schizogeny is the localized separation of plant cells to form a cavity (surrounded by the intact cells) in which secretions accumulate (such as resin canals).
The two songs heard in the episode, "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)" by Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper and "Deep" by Danzig, are both from the 1996 compilation called "Songs in the Key of X: Music from and Inspired by The X-Files." The album contained a mixture of songs that were either featured in the series, or shared thematic elements with it. The song "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)" received a nomination for the Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1997, losing to Rage Against the Machine. The song "Deep" was specially made for the compilation album, since Glenn Danzig (the former lead member of the band Misfits) is a huge fan of The X-Files. Another notable song on the compilation album is "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave which plays on the radio in the car that unhinged Duane Barry is using in the season 2 episode "Ascension" to take abducted Scully to the Skyland Mountain.
Katherine Isabelle (Lisa) is the daughter of the show's producer Graeme Murray. She later became a minor horror icon thanks primarily to the "Ginger Snaps" series of horror movies about werewolves.
As of 2016 there are five actors/actresses in this episode who have also appeared in Supernatural - Chad Lindberg (5 episodes, 2006-2007), Katharine Isabelle, (2 episodes, 2007), Laurie Murdoch (2006), Sarah-Jane Redmond (2009, 2015) and Gardinar Millar (2007, 2014). They also share a filming location - Fort Langley, Langley Township, British Columbia, Canada, which is used in the Supernatural episode 'Shut Up, Dr.Phil'.
During the original airing of this episode, Mulder's final speech differed significantly from the closed-captioning. The original closed-captioning said, ""ABUSE EXISTS, AS DOES THE BLINDNESS THAT ACCOMPANIES IT. THE PLEADING CRIES IN THE NIGHT FOLLOWED BY THE DISTURBING DENIAL OF CULPABILITY: 'IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED, I DIDN'T SEE IT.' AS WITNESS TO A HORRIFIC EVENT I AM FORCED TO QUESTION THE FREQUENTLY BLURRED LINE BETWEEN RIGHT AND WRONG TO WEIGH THE GUILT OF ONE MAN'S ACT AGAINST ANOTHER'S TO DECIDE IF JUSTICE WAS SERVED OR IF A GRIEVOUS INJUSTICE HAS PREVAILED. AND IF PRESSED ON THE SUBJECT OF WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT IN THE ORCHARD I WILL SPEAK AS TRUTHFULLY AS I CAN: IF SOMETHING BAD HAPPENED, I DIDN'T SEE IT." Later airings of the episode include revised closed captioning that match the audio track.
The cast and crew nicknamed Salaiset kansiot: Schizogeny (1998) as The Killer Tree Episode.
Gillian Anderson and Katherine Isabelle will reunite again in Hannibal, even though their stories don't join.
Sarah-Jane Redmond, who plays the episode's "monster of the week" villain, starred in Chris Carter's other successful TV series "Millennium" as Lucy Butler, the recurring demonic archnemesis of the main protagonist, former FBI profiler Frank Black (played by Lance Henriksen). Henriksen also later appeared (as Frank Black) on the X-Files in season 7 episode also called "Millennium" that serves both as a crossover between the two shows and the series finale for the canceled Millennium TV series.
