» » Once Upon a Time - Es war einmal ... The Song in Your Heart (2011–2018)

Short summary

In flashback, Snow makes a wish that causes everyone to burst into song, infuriating the Evil Queen. In Storybrooke, this wish comes back into play as Emma and Hook prepare for their wedding, and the Black Fairy announces her plans.

Emma's wedding dress was heavily inspired by the gown Grace Kelly wore for her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco.

While filming the scene "Revenge is Gonna Be Mine", Colin O'Donogue (Captain Hook) was performing a stunt with a chair early in the scene where he landed the wrong way and broke his foot. He continued filming though, not wanting to ruin the take. Colin also proceeded to film the remainder of his scenes for the season with a broken foot; including the dance at the end of this episode and climbing a beanstalk in the next episode.

The object/animal/person in this episode is an orchestra.

All the cast members are actually singing with their own voices, no one was dubbed.

This will be the first (and most likely only) musical episode of the series.

Ginnifer Goodwin was very unsure about singing with her own voice, as she felt she wasn't talented enough. This was in spite of the fact that she had previously done a little singing for the animated children's show Sofia the First. The producers said they were blown away by her audition and were enthusiastic about her singing role in the episode.

All cast members did have to "audition" in a way for their parts. But this was simply so the songs could be tailored specifically for their vocal ranges.

Colin O'Donoghue has no Broadway experience but was in a band called The Enemies for many years.

This musical episode was conceived during the series' third season, but according to showrunner Jane Espenson, it was too expensive at the time. The producers revisited the idea in July 2016 after receiving feedback and requests from viewers.

The producers enlisted the help of Broadway vets Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner, who were already fans of the show, to write the original musical numbers.

Ironically, even though Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold didn't do any singing, Robert Carlyle is an accomplished singer who has contributed to film soundtracks in the past.

Emilie de Ravin (Belle) is credited but does not actually appear in this episode

Big surprise this episode was. Not being a fan of musicals, I enjoyed it a lot. The idea behind the music in this episode was that music is a kind of magic that can stand to evil, so all the singing did not felt off the context if I may say so.

The musical scenes were directed great, comparing with the very bad and cringe directing of the entire show. The composers did a great job. And some of the actors were amazing in the singing scenes. Snow and Charming are naturals, their performance was spot on. Hook did a great job also, his musical scene together with the charming's one were better in any way than any scene from Lalala Land.

The other actors did well, Gold refused to sing in a funny way, Regina had a crazy number, best episode of this show. If a season 7 will be happening, wish for more of such musical episodes.

I really enjoyed it! I began to see Unce upon a time from first season was released. Last season was so confused. Too many independent story lines was mixed through this season. I even thought that the show was going through some kind of ideological stagnation... But this show was really surprised me! Very saturated and contrast show! Thanks for this hard work.

After a little downhill of the series since season 5, this can be called the best episode ever!! When I heard there would be 8 songs in this episode, I was afraid that it might be too much and the plot would be rushed. But then, the music, the scene, the plot, everything is just flawless. All the casts have amazing voice. The songs are catchy. And they perfectly fit the story lines. There is nothing more that I could've ever hoped for in this musical.

So when I first heard they were going to do an musical episode I was skeptical. I was like "okay......" but then I knew previous shows that had attempted a musical episode and it worked - Buffy and Scrubs and hearing that some of the cast members in OUAT had background in music I was like I'll let it unfold The clips started to unfold, photos, goss and music. I recommend not listening to the songs before you see the episode because you enjoy them more seeing the dancing and then buying the album. A lot of hard work went into this episode and you see in rehearsal footage the cast worked hard on this. My favourites were Snow White and Prince Charming's number, Captain Hook's song and Emma's song but all the songs were amazing. I still listen to them to this day and it's not even been a week since the episode aired. I know many think musical episode really? please don't think like that until you see it, for me it goes up there with Buffy's episode. It sets the tone for the finale and it was a nice light fun special episode and relevant to the character of Emma.

Being a lover of Once Upon a Time & musicals, this episode did not disappoint. Loved the songs & musical numbers & how the music fit into the story & helped set up the season finale

I have loved this episode! It really reminded me of the musical 'wicked' but each song was original.

The singing was great - who knew they were all such great singers! I loved the story-line - such a great 'almost' ending.... It's been based on fairy tales / Disney all along, so enjoy it for what it is - I have!

I see there is some hate out there, but for a show based on Disney characters people should wonder why it took them 6 years to make a musical! I think it was cool and I like seeing actors be able to sing. It was a complete surprise to me though. I really liked the first song with Snow and Charming. To me it felt like it fit right into the Disney world. I'd prefer a few funny songs like Buffy had, but they were decent songs. The episode overall wasn't anything too special though. I liked it well enough. There was a reason for the singing, but it did seem to be tossed in there without much cause.

I don't know why writers think it's a good idea to randomly create musical TV shows. They recently did this with the Flash and now this. And I am a girl who loves corny romantic musicals but not when it's a normal TV show. Keep musicals musicals and TV shows regular TV shows. I ended up fast forwarding pretty must all of the songs so I watched very little of the actual episode.

Worst episode till date! The show has been getting worst with every episode and today it has hit the bottom. I think the writers have to buck up and put some effort into it. The highlights of the episode were none. Rumplestelskin was the asset of the show but lately even his part is being degraded by the writers , and most definitely the wedding of emma is a joke !

There was really no need for this, I love a good musical however this added nothing to the story at all and wasn't fun. Took itself a bit too seriously for what it was.

I tried to give every song a chance but ended up skipping past most of it. I think after quite an inventive and interesting start this show is running out of steam and this episode felt completely gimmicky. Seems to be a love it or hate it deal.

I agree with those other reviewers who gave it one star. I suffered through the first couple of musical numbers then fast-forwarded the rest. Previously I had never missed a scene in Once Upon a Time. I'm quite a musical person and don't mind musicals but this one felt so wrong, sickening and out of place. I had this happen once before, many years ago, a musical Simpsons episode, and on that occasion I switched the TV off when they continued singing after the first ad break. I had been expecting to enjoy it as I like weddings and it is almost the end of the season. Such a letdown.

Let me start by saying I HATE when they take a TV show and randomly throw in a musical episode. I ended up fast forwarding past all of the stupidity so I only watched about 15 min of the show. I hope they never do another episode like this. I don't mind musicals if that is what they are from the beginning. Like Grease is awesome. It's just the random TV episode being made as a musical that really irks me.

May be my own personal view but if I wanna see musicals I'll stick to Oliver twist... To be honest I had to skip through most of the songs kinda ruined it for me. Very cringe worthy m8

With each passing chapter, I am more and more disappointed. What was already getting horrible could have made it worse. Let's agree: MUSICAL!?!?!?!? I'm sad, it will be a melancholy end to such a cool series, I will not follow Season 7!Seeing the Bad Queen and the Savior flitting, doing magic while the Black Fairy looked "scared" made me feel ashamed of the actors.

Musicals in a classic Disney cartoon is understandable but even then, never in my experience to this degree. Series builds up to a final battle but we get a 'best of' / 'greatest hits' episode instead; incredibly strange.
