» » Glee The Power of Madonna (2009–2015)

Short summary

Mr. Schuester is concerned that the girls in the glee club are being disrespected and bullied by the guys. Looking to Madonna and her musical message of equality as inspiration, he challenges the entire team to choose Madonna songs as their next assignment in the hopes that the girls embrace her strength, independence and confidence and that the guys will see the error of their misogynistic ways. The glee club takes the assignment to heart as they perform some of Madonna's greatest hits, including "Express Yourself" and "Like A Prayer." Meanwhile, Kurt and Mercedes give Sue a vote of confidence with a makeover that is definitely in "Vogue."

Madonna watched an advance copy of the episode before it aired, and then released a statement voicing her approval: "I thought the Madonna episode of Glee (2009) was brilliant on every level. The dialogue and the entire script was genius. I completely appreciated the layers of irony, especially when all those macho boys sang 'What It Feels Like For A Girl.' I also loved the fantastic performances of 'Vogue,' 'Express Yourself' and all the messages about the boys being respectful to girls. The entire cast was amazing. They're all so talented. I especially loved Sue Sylvester and Kurt Hummel's characters. Ryan Murphy did a great job bringing all these elements together. [Madonna's daughter] Lola loved the show too. I wish I went to a high school like that... if only."

A Madonna show was the first concert Lea Michele ever attended.

When Jesse and Rachel are making out (at around 3 mins), the music playing is from the song "Hello 12, Hello 13, Hello Love" from the musical "A Chorus Line". Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff recorded a version of this song for Glee: Hell-O (2010) but the scene was cut.

The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Comedy or Drama Series (One Hour).

This episode was fantastic! All the Glee episodes are amazing, but this one was a standout. I loved how they took the best of Madonna and used it to incorporate the ideas of female empowerment, while still managing to put the signature Glee fun into it. Not only that, but they showed the guys seeing it from and accepting the girls' point of view too - the best of both worlds. It was one of the most fun 1 hour of television I have ever experienced. This episode's effect on audiences shows how Glee is a game-changer in the world of television. It is changing the way people view TV and deserves all the merit it gets. It's one of the best and most hard-working shows on TV, and this episode is proof of that.

This special episode is microcosmic of the show's values and for all that it stands for and presents. For Gleeks it is a must, and for everyone else still essential viewing!

There was maybe 3 or 4 minutes of this hour that didn't have to do with Madonna. It's like honey. Honey is really good and sweet but too much of it starts to make you feel a little sick.

It also felt that several key parts of the storyline were adjusted just so they could connect it to Madonna. Having 3 virgins suddenly want to have sex just so they could play "Like a Virgin" didn't really fit the flow of the season. Making all the guys act even more like misogynists than usual so they could empower all the girls was kind of offensive as well.

It almost felt like Madonna's agent was standing over their shoulders during this episode, trying to eek out every minute of promotion for his client.

Don't get me wrong, it was still enjoyable. But not up to the usual standards I've come to expect from Glee.

Well, I finally watched the first of the "Glee" theme episodes! In this one, Madonna's music is showcased through the courtesy of Sue Sylvester who decides to have the school intercom filled with her songs for the day though Emma's office is the exception since Sue doesn't think she is sexy enough. Depite her club-mates warnings, Rachel is indeed dating rival glee member Jesse but doesn't want to go all the way with him. When Finn finds out, he agrees to have sex with Santana. And Emma herself decides to give herself to Will...I'll stop there and just say what a wonderful showcase of many of Madge's greatest hits that were compiled for this episode of "Glee"! Especially noteworthy was Sue's tribute video of her "Vogue" in which she changes a few lyrics in which one mentions her and another mentions Will as in "Will Schuester, I hate you!" Kudos for everyone involved. Can't wait to watch another episode...
