The script for Cleansing was written in 4 hours in one night as an exercise in recovery. The filming took a total of 7 and a half hours during one night to complete with no re-shoots.

The most complicated shot was the opening tracking shot. After 5 attempts, it was discovered in editing that it worked better without.

The story was structured to include the effects of domestic abuse on differing sexual preferences due to the director discovering during research that 85% of films single out the effects on straight females.

Dean Winter, Hannah Mason and Joel Kirkpatrick's roles were written with the actors in mind. No other actor was considered for their roles. Carl Roberts was chosen after he sat in on an audition and blew everyone away with his performance. Hayley Thomas auditioned online and won the role over 3 other actresses. Sophie Toland impressed the director during previous auditions for other projects and was deemed perfect for the role.

Although the subject was a deeply emotional subject matter, production of the film became a night of hilarity for cast and crew. Surviving the night shoot on a diet of coffee and pro plus tablets, production halted when members of the cast got uncontrollable fits of laughter at around 3am.

Although studying a Masters Degree at University during filming, Andrew R. Carson made the film independently from his course and has gone on to say it is his most complete film.

The full cast never had a full read through together before the night of filming.

The cigarette packet that Nathan keeps holding throughout the film belonged to the Director. Carl Roberts, a non-smoker, is smoking the director's cigarettes in the outside scenes.

All outside scenes were the final sequences shot for the film at 5.30am.
