Short summary

Sebastian, Chief Archer in the Roman Army, converts to Christianity. A favorite of Emperor Augustus, Sebastian's devotion to Christ eventually drives him to reject the Emperor's love, causing the Emperor to angrily order Sebastian to be shot with arrows by his fellow archers. The film retells this mystery play with a definite 'art-house' approach: an almost poetical use of language, singing, dancing, some homoerotic themes, and some special effects.

Debussy. And the play of D' Annunzio.Petr Weigl. and Michael Biehn. the presence of Franco Citti as visible link with the universe of Pasolini. because, in few scenes, the parallel is obvious. but the film is more than a copy or adaptation or only portrait of a saint. the poetic dialogues, the passion of Biehn, remembering many other performances from religious films are good points of a story who has another significant virtue - it is a story with universal echo. the images from XX century, from Shoah to the Ku Klux Klan and poverty in Africa represents the touching note who gives specific identity to this film. and one of the good motifs to see it because, against the tools specific for 1984, it has the force and grace to remain a real interesting film about faith, change and sacrifice.
