On Tuesday, December 13, Danelle Ballengee headed out for a seemingly uneventful trail run in Moab. But 56 hours later, she was nowhere to be found. Thankfully, her running partner and dog, Taz, alerted search and rescue members of her whereabouts-a small slab of rock at the bottom of a hidden canyon off the desert's Amasa Back Trail. The four-time Pikes Peak Marathon winner, world-champion adventure racer and six-time, four-sport "U.S. Athlete of the Year" had slipped on an icy patch while scrambling up a rocky section of trail, and fallen to the canyon floor below. She shattered her pelvis, was bleeding internally, and though she tried to crawl to safety, it took her five hours to painfully drag herself a quarter of a mile.
