I used to have this catchphrase some years ago: 'That's the worse bit of acting since Pete Beale.'

The actor Peter Dean would later find fame as the fruit & veg stallholder Pete Beale in Eastenders. Here in A Villain's Tale he plays the unlikely leader of a gang of rogues, Jack Lynn who is planning a hold up.

Lynn gets wind that there is a grass about and needs to postpone his plans but DI Pyall plans to fit him up even if it means getting hold of hair samples, pointing witnesses to the right direction and even getting them to sign a blank statement form that would be filled in later.

The episode cross-cuts with the events in the first episode. However Lynn comes across as a small time hood than some kind of Mr Big that he was built up to be in the first episode. He has a wife who wants him to go straight by becoming a cab driver. He hustles a bit at the snooker hall and even drops his kids at school.

Like all villains in the 1970s he drives a Jaguar. Did Lynn ever watch Regan and Carter in The Sweeney? He should had known a Jag stands no chance when the cops chase after you driving a Ford. Ironically when John Thaw played Inspector Morse in the 1980s, he drove a Jaguar chasing villains trying to get away in a Ford. Fashion, it can be so fickle!
