He seeks shelter for the night in a mountain cave, where a ghostly apparition of a Native American medicine man appears to him. Johnny is led into a dreamscape to unlock the mysteries of the shaman, who also had the so-called gift of the 'Dead Zone'--seeing into someone's future by a mere touch.

I just finished the final season of Dead Zone and throughout all of the shows season after season I have been waiting for one to be as good as this one. It didn't happen. Don't get me wrong, there were very few that I didn't like... at least a bit, but this show in particular was what I feel was the best of the best of an outstanding, truly wonderful, television series. Now don't skip ahead either. This one needs you to be fully familiar with Jonnie's abilities and his shortcomings for you to truly appreciate it for what it is. Having said that, I feel that the first season in particular was the best TV I have ever seen. The writing was second to none. The editing perfect. The acting, due to fantastic casting of very talented performers, was wonderful. Anthony M Hall, brilliantly embraced a new character as though he had played it all his life. His finest performance however came at the other end of the series. In the final episode of the final season when he is staring into the eyes of a long lost relative, there is no doubt whatsoever that he has become a brilliant actor.

"Shaman" was easily the best episode of The Dead Zone's first season. We see Johnny directly interacting with someone in his visions for the first time because their "dead zone" is also active. We also see Johnny having visions during a time period far outside his own (roughly 500 years) for the first time.

"Shaman" reminded me of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Darmok" (S05E02). Both episodes involved two people who do not speak the same language and come from vastly different cultures finding a way to work together towards a common goal.

"Shaman" was simply a beautiful and powerful story that showed us the Dead Zone at its best. I thought episode eight, "Netherworld," where Johnny sees visions of the life he would have had with Sarah if his car accident and the subsequent coma never happened wasted this interesting idea with the plot line about the explosion at the mall caused by construction workers. On the other hand, "Shaman" masterfully ties in Johnny's visions from hundreds of years in Johnny's past to the present. For Dead Zone fans, "Shaman" is definitely worth a rewatch.
