Vera La Croix was an actress, a very beautiful one, with great charm and fascination. She went to spend a part of the summer at a beautiful rustic place, Shady Dell. Among the guests at the summer hotel were Tommy Smart, his mother, and Tommy's sweetheart, Violet. Now Violet was just as nice a little girl as any man could want, but the minute Tommy saw Vera, her dashing style and the fascination of her city manners and elegant gowns, captivated him. Vera was accustomed to the admiration of men, and as men were scarce in Shady Dell, she was inclined to have a little flirtation with Tommy. Tommy was about to fall head over heels in love with her in spite of the protests of his mother.
