This movie is a masterpiece of social criticism in that it accurately pointed out the problem that is so rampant in China: those who held the key positions are not capable, but they are there anyway simply because they have good connections with the top bras (often either earned by being obedient to the superiors or being related by blood or marriage).

However, whenever those who are below them have shown their ability, it is viewed as a threat because such ability challenges the incompetent bosses. Although this movie is made in the 1980's, what is criticized here via the manager-worker relationship still applies today for those inefficient state-owned-enterprise.
