For most stories directly based on an R.L. Stine book (not episode two "Scareful What You Wish for", or episode five "School Spirit", though the latter did share characters with episode nine "Full Moon Halloween", which was book-based, nor episode four "Tangled Web" or episode ten "Four Eyes", which were inspired by certain ideas in "Liar Liar" and "Visitors", respectively), at least one character, usually a supporting character but occasionally a protagonist, had a name and often a gender switch. Most notably, the three main characters in episode eight "My Name is Evil" had initials that matched their book counterparts', but changed from girls to boys (the best friends dropping from triplets to a pair of friends who were probably not related).

Some of the hastily-viewed items featured in the opening include (in this order): a clown-masked robber from episode four "Tangled Web", a funhouse dummy from episode eight "My Name is Evil", the werewolf from episode nine "Full Moon Halloween", the moon that was the ending shot in episode ten "Four Eyes", the exploding crystal ball from episode eight "My Name is Evil", the document from episode seven "Fear Games", the coin from episode one "Don't Forget Me", Buddy's doll head from episode two "Scareful What You Wish For", the diary from episode twelve "Dear Diary, I'm Dead", the Fatemaster's Lucky Charm case from episode eleven "Locker 13", and the trophy from episode five "School Spirit".
