» » Batman The Clock King (1992–1995)

Short summary

A ruined efficiency expert with an uncanny sense of timing and schedules plots his revenge against Mayor Hill.

The Clock King's real identity is Temple Fugate, whose name is an allusion to the Latin expression "tempus fugit" (time flies).

The Clock King's address is given as "362 Breyfogle". Norm Breyfogle, was an artist that worked on Batman comics for almost a decade.

The Clock King (efficiency experts who make uncanny use of timing) comes from from DC Comics, though his character is much different from the animated version. The original Clock King was named William Tockman and his crimes were motivated by the need to provide for his sister when he mistakenly believed he was dying of illness, this Clock King first appeared as a Rogue of Green Arrow, but is probably best known for his membership in The Suicide Squad and thus a rogue of Batman and sometimes the Justice League.

The Clock Kings strategy of studying Batman before engaging him directly would later be repeated in the episode Bane.

This is kind of a goofy episode, not as intense as normal or with a villain that was very interesting. He was bland, compared to most of the villainous characters on this fine animated television show. However, the ending was very cool and I enjoyed watching the crackpot at the end and his ploy to get rid of the mayor.

Basically, it was an older gentleman and former businessman who unfairly lost all his money because he was late to see the judge in his case. Seven years later, "Temple Fugate" comes back to torment to mayor, who is running for re-election, by screwing up Gotham City's electrical system, such as stoplights and the new subway system, and another crime that almost kills Batman.

This episode wound up, overall, as decent because it got better as went along and finished strong.

The Clock King is easily one of Batman's sillier villains, but he's a decent fir for such a silly episode. It's got that Silver Age feel with the series of ornate traps - especially the big clock setup with mayor Hill; like it was pulled from a splash page in a comic.

I like the intent behind this one, but between the milquetoast villain and lesser animation quality, this is fairly forgettable. It's aimed squarely at the younger audience. To be honest, I'd forgotten about this one; whenever I think Clock King, it's the later time travel episode.

Batman: The Animated Series has a history of developing amazing back-stories for their villains (Mr. Freeze in Heart of Ice is probably the greatest such story). The time guy in this episode is my second favorite.

This man is paranoid about being on time. One day, during his train ride to office, Mayor Hill tells him to loosen up and delay his afternoon coffee by 15 minutes. He eventually is late for court and loses $20 million! He goes absolutely psycho after this.

I was blown away by this. Think about it. If you were never, ever in your life late for an appointment and the only time you are behind schedule, you end up losing everything in your life, imagine how it would affect you! That is what I love about this series. On some level, you feel sorry for the villains. What the villains do is almost always rational, but never ethical. But Batman is such a beacon of perfection, you know deep down that what the Dark Knight is doing is always right. The Clock King is one more episode in this list of pure awesome.

I give it only an 8 since I found the actual plot to be a bit mundane. The villain himself is quite bland. His motivation is riveting. But his execution is boring.

    Batman: The Animated Series

One of the most successful and loved franchise of Batman, depicts the comic version at its best by going deep into the character's perspective rather than trying to cover-up or justify its sketchy tone. The animation is not only convincingly good but also seems like a lot of thought is invested on its cinematography which for the most part of it works on metaphorical way. Kevin Conroy seems the apt choice to be the voice of Batman (although not so sure about Bruce Wayne) and so does Robert Hastings for Commissioner James Gordon as it has the right amount of depth in it. A smarter approach by the makers by narrowing it down to only 20 minutes and get right to the point, keeping the audience engaged. It also brings in bigger cast like Mark Hamill to do the voice over of Joker, which is done with genuine passion and enthusiasm that is clearly visible on screen. Addition to that, the makers keep some of the villains under their sleeve and uses it as a trump card whenever felt necessary that helps in continuity and glue all individual cases as much as possible.

    Season 01

It, being the longest and acclaimed season of it all since this is where the scrutiny began which got the series its Emmy too. Since the season covers up more than half of the series, it comes with larger expectations to fill especially on terms of character development; the key that helps the viewers last long and enthusiast throughout the course of it. Also, it takes a smarter approach on projecting more of newer character's perspective (mostly its the villain), as it helps to create the anticipated impact.

    The Clock King

It probably is the most misguided episode as it fails to capture the gravitas, stakes and gravitas of the character's perspective which latter makes it question his actions and integrity along with it as it all goes ridicule crime news in the end.
