Tonight is the big night for Chandler: he will propose to Monica. Rachel, Phoebe and Joey go to a beneficial dinner organized by Rachel's boss. Joey bids at a silent auction because he thought you had to guess the prize and therefore buys a boat for $20,000. Just as Chandler is about to propose Richard walks into the restaurant with his girlfriend and they sit at the table next to Chandler and Monica so Chandler can't propose. Elizabeth isn't as mature as Ross had thought so he breaks up with her. Chandler doesn't want to make Monica suspicious and find out about his plan so he acts as if he was still afraid of commitment. Richard goes to see Monica at the restaurant and says he still loves her.

The writers originally intended for Ross to discover that Elizabeth was pregnant in "The One With The Proposal". Ross would discover after their baby was born that it wasn't his. This idea was scrapped as writers didn't want to put viewers through an entire pregnancy that would later prove to have nothing to do with the central characters.

Ross getting hit in the back by a water balloon in Elizabeth's apartment was unintentional and as such his reaction was ad-libbed.

Dr. Richard Burke (Tom Selleck), recites an excerpt from a poem at dinner: "In the sweetness of friendship, let there be laughter and sharing of pleasures. For in the dew of little things, the heart finds its morning and is refreshed." It is the end of Kahlil Gibran's "On Friendship".

The crystal on the table at the restaurant where Monica and Chandler are having dinner is Baccarat (or they're good replicas). The champagne is Dom Perignon. It really IS a fancy restaurant.
