Short summary
Joe Yule, who appears uncredited as a waiter, is the father of cast member Mickey Rooney, whose real name is Joe Yule, Jr.
Adapted from the Broadway musical "Panama Hattie", which opened at the 46th Street Theater in New York October 30, 1940 and ran for 501 performances. Ethel Merman played Hattie, Betty Hutton was Flo, Rags Ragland originated his movie role, Arthur Treacher played the butler, James Dunn was Bullet, and future film stars June Allyson, Lucille Bremer, Betsy Blair, Doris Dowling and Vera-Ellen were dancers. Allyson was also Hutton's understudy.
Although Ethel Merman was passed over for the role of Hattie in this film, she later played the role in the TV production Panama Hattie (1954) costarring Art Carney and Ray Middleton.
Additional scenes and retakes were directed by Roy Del Ruth and Vincente Minnelli after original director Norman Z. McLeod left the film.
This film's initial telecast in Chicago took place Friday 1 March 1957 on WBBM (Channel 2); in first aired in Seattle 31 March 1957 on KING (Channel 5), in Phoenix 7 April 1957 on KPHO (Channel 5), in Portland OR 14 April 1957 on KGW (Channel 8), in Memphis 1 October 1957 on WHBQ (Channel 13), in Philadelphia 3 November 1957 on WFIL (Channel 6), in Los Angeles 15 November 1957 on KTTV (Channel 11), in Altoona PA 26 February 1958 on WFBG (Channel 10), in San Francisco 6 March 1958 on KGO (Channel 7), in New York City 16 August 1958 on WCBS (Channel 2), and, finally, in Minneapolis 2 January 1961 on WTCN (Channel 11).
Pierre Watkin (Admiral Tree) and Stanley Andrews (Colonel John Briggs) were in studio records for those roles, but never appeared. Lester Dorr was listed as a cast member in a news item but was not seen in the movie.
