Short summary
Trailers "Maurice (1987)"
In the DVD extras, Hugh Grant says that because he and James Wilby already knew each other from appearing in Privileged (1982) together, they were able to practice their scenes together at Grant's house the night before Wilby's audition. Grant says that he remembers it "being a surprise to my banker brother when he came home and found me kissing James Wilby in the front room."
In the DVD extras, James Wilby remembers that the movie's final scene, a love scene between his character (Maurice) and Rupert Graves' character (Scudder) was shot on the fourth day of filming, and because of the complete lack of rehearsal time, he and Graves had barely even met beforehand.
James Wilby recalls on the DVD extras that there were no rehearsals at all for the movie, only two reads-through, and then the start of filming.
Just before filming the nude bed scene in the hotel, the bed that Rupert Graves and James Wilby were in collapsed.
King's College, Cambridge, permitted the production to film there after much consideration. The delay was not over the movie's subject matter, but due to the fact that many scholars consider Forster's novel an inferior work.
Julian Sands was chosen for the title role, but was delayed on another movie, Siesta (1987). Wilby had previously been passed over for a smaller role because it was felt his height and blond hair were too close to Sands' appearance.
This movie was part of a mid 1980s to early 1990s cycle of mostly theatrical movie adaptations of works and novels by E.M. Forster. The others being (in order): Reise nach Indien (1984), Zimmer mit Aussicht (1985), Billy Budd (1988), Engel und Narren (1991), and Wiedersehen in Howards End (1992).
John Malkovich was meant to take the role of Dr. Lasker-Jones. Malkovich had become a friend of Julian Sands after making Killing Fields - Schreiendes Land (1984). However, when Sands left the project, Malkovich lost interest in the role.
Helena Bonham Carter and James Wilby appeared in Zimmer mit Aussicht (1985) and Wiedersehen in Howards End (1992).
One of the country house locations, Wilbury Park, was owned by the actress Maria Britneva.
Helena Bonham Carter, Rupert Graves, James Wilby, Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow, Kitty Aldridge, Patrick Godfrey, Phillada Sewell, and Maria Britneva appeared in Zimmer mit Aussicht (1985), also directed by James Ivory.
Final theatrical movie of Maria Britneva (Mrs. Sheepshanks).
The cast includes one Oscar winner: Sir Ben Kingsley; and two Oscar nominees: Denholm Elliott and Helena Bonham Carter.
Final theatrical movie of Phillada Sewell (Matron).
One of several mid to late 1980s period movies featuring Hugh Grant. The others being: Der Fremde am Strand (1988), Die letzten Tage in Kenya (1987), Die bengalische Nacht (1988), Charles Heidsieck - Ein Leben, berauschend wie Champagner (1989), Remando al viento (1988), Der Biss der Schlangenfrau (1988), and Gefährdete Liebe (1989).
Theatrical movie debut of Julian Wadham (Hull).
