100 YEARS OF HORROR is a 26-episode TV series made in 1996 and featuring the delightful Christopher Lee as host, his sonorous narration exploring the history of horror cinema in the 20th century. Each themed episode contains plentiful clips from the films mentioned along with brief interview footage seemingly culled from other documentaries as well as TV shows and the like.

ALIENS is an atypical episode of the series as the majority of the films featured here are by definition science fiction pictures rather than horror movies, but otherwise the territory is the same. Roger Corman's B-movies of the 1950s are discussed and EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS is featured, which is always a pleasure. John Carpenter's also on hand to mention his remakes as well as the originals of THE THING and VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, and some of the most interesting footage is from Orson Welles's infamous WAR OF THE WORLDS radio adaptation from 1938.

100 Years of Horror: Aliens (1996)

    *** 1/2 (out of 4)

This episode takes a look at aliens and the countless number of movies that they appear in. Host Christopher Lee makes the right comment when he says that these are the only monsters that had an extra benefit because many people watching the films in question believed what they were seeing as being possible. The film we see clips from include: INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE, both versions of THE THING, THE BLOB, QUEEN OF BLOOD, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, IT CONQUERED THE WORLD, WAR OF THE SATELLITES and of course DEVIL GIRL FROM MARS.

This episodes also features a pretty good group of interviews including John Carpenter, Ray Bradbury, Roger Corman, Beverly Garland, Hazel Court, Dick Miller, Robert Wise and Gloria Talbott. We get to hear from Carpenter who talks about his favorite genre and this includes his ideas on the remake THE THING as well as VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED. Corman and Garland tell pretty funny stories about the making of IT CONQUERED THE WORLD and we get some other good stories about what can happen with low budgets. Once again, those who are familiar with the films in question aren't going to learn anything they didn't already know but I think those unfamiliar with them are going to get a kick out of the clips and they'll certainly have many worthy titles to track down.
