Short summary

Louise is not very popular at her high school. Then she learns that she's descended from the witches of Salem and has inherited their powers. At first she uses them to get back at the girls and teachers who teased her and to win the heart of the handsome footballer's captain. But soon she has doubts if it's right to 'cheat' her way to popularity.

The creepy house Louise Miller walks into at the start of the movie was used by Michael Jackson in his 1982 music video "Thriller".

Dick Sargent had another witch daughter, Tabitha on Bewitched (1964).

The film was originally intended to be a female version of Teen Wolf (1985) and it went as far as to borrow the design for the lettering, the tag line, and the shell of the plot line.

Shooting locations included Hobart, IN, St. Louis, MO, and Chicago, IL. The house that served as Louise Miller's house in the film can still be found today on Nitin Street in Hobart.

During the Q&A session at a personal appearance for a screening, Robyn Lively said the scene in which she and Zelda Rubinstein sit in one another's laps was filmed after lunch, and Zelda had terrible breath, which made it difficult for Robyn to keep a straight face. Robyn didn't know Zelda was in the audience.

Madam Serena says "I like your cutesy little Punky Brewster face." Robyn Lively played Lisa in two episodes of Punky Brewster.

At a personal appearance during a screening, Mandy Ingber admitted to the audience that she had an 'attitude problem' on the set because she felt 'the director had no idea what he was doing'. She also explained that her infamous 'Top That' number was not in the original script, and was filmed during a re-shoot. Mandy has since become a yoga instructor, has written a NY Times best-seller on yoga, and counts Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lawrence, and Brooke Shields among her clients.

Teen Witch Live!, a comedy musical based on the film is currently at LA's famous Groundlings Theater.

Robyn makes her date David disappear and he never comes back throughout the whole movie.

The interior set for Madame Serena's house did not have steps leading up to it like the shots of the exterior showed. After shutting the front door to leave, Robyn Lively would crouch down as she walked away.

Dan Gauthier (Brad) and Lisa Fuller (Randa) married in 1990 and are still together (as of 2018).

Ellen DeGeneres was considered to play a high-school teacher.

As of late 2009, Ashley Tisdale has been attached to a remake of "Teen Witch" playing the title role. Ashley Tisdale commented in 2010 saying they were expecting to start filming late that year but still, as of 2012 no word on the project or its future.

According to Robyn Lively during an interview at the screening of Teen Witch at San Francisco's Sketch Fest (2016), the interior of Madam Serena's house was filmed on a sound stage. So, whenever she exits the front of the house, she had to imitate the motion of walking down the steps.

One of the first films to change teenagers' choice in music from rock to rap.

Marcia Wallace and Tina Caspary also appeared in My Mom's a Werewolf (1989). Both films included a mysterious gypsy fortune teller.

This film marks the second time that actors Caren Kaye and Joshua Miller played mother and son. The first time was in "21 Jump Street / In the Custody of a Clown", two years prior.

Louise's past life name is "Modesty Miller".

Near the end of the movie, the character Kiki accidentally breaks her leg. 10 minutes later she shows up at the dance, just fine.

I can't help it--I love this movie. It's so adorably cliché and predictable that I get a kick out of it every time that I see it. The soundtrack is great 80's pop, and the songs keep playing in my head long after the movie's over. What teen girl hasn't wished she could "magically" put the "snobby cheerleader" in her place and walk away with the popular guy? Louise gets that chance when she inherits her powers on her 16th birthday and uses them to make herself "the most popular girl." Yes, it's a bit silly in spots, but it has fun dance numbers and great 80's hairstyles and clothes. If you love the 80's, you will enjoy this movie!

Okay, so the 80's were evil. We can all agree on that statement, right? But Teen Witch is still a fun movie to watch, if only for looking back and laughing at the decade. Pink socks on the fellas, acid wash jeans, Madonna attire...what the heck were we thinking? Aside from the chance to cringe at the fashion trends, Teen Witch has some amusing and truly original moments. Here they are, in no particular order:

    1. I'm pretty sure Teen Witch is a musical, even if the movie won't admit it. Who can forget these songs? There's "I Like Boys," where cheerleaders prance around the locker room in neon leotards and treat towels like dance ribbons. And there's "Top That," a rap cession between Acid Wash Boy and Madonna Gal that's hilarious.

    2. There's a scene where the Teen Witch and her 'popular' boyfriend explore a lighthouse or something while peeling off small articles of clothing. We leave with them kissing, but its kinda suggestive for a teen movie. Did Teen Witch get herself some action??

    3. I like the ending. The cool guy could have turned out to be a jerk, trying to make out with her or something, but Teen Witch doesn't go on that familiar route. Instead the 'geek' manages to nab the cool guy without her powers, showing that she just needed confidence. Way fab.

See Teen Witch. It's like, totally mackadacious. 3 out of 4 stars.

Louise Miller (Robyn Lively) is not very popular at her high school. Then she learns that she is descended from the witches of Salem and has inherited their powers.

First, what is up with that little brother (Joshua John Miller)? He is a terrifying mutant and it is hard to tell exactly what he is going for with those faces and voices. Oh my. And then there is the Rob Lowe joke, which is even funnier now (2015) than it was then (1989), given Lowe's departure from fame and triumphant return.

Somehow, despite losing millions of dollars at the box office, this has gone on to be a cult classic (allegedly) and there is a musical adaptation. Who is in this cult? But the musical makes sense, as there are a number of song and dance numbers that could be easily adapted. The film is not completely horrible, just somehow a bit off.

Teen Witch (1989) was one of those "white elephant" movies that I always found perversely entertaining. I'm like a moth drawn to an open flame whenever this movie is on T.V. I don't know why I like movies like these, but for some strange reason I do. The movie is an exercise in bad acting, gaudy clothes and inane situations. Personally I wouldn't have a movie like this in my collection but whenever it's on I'm there.

A teenage girl (Robin Lively) is about to have her sweet sixteen birthday. One day whilst having bad luck in general, she comes across a palm reader's abode. Seeking calm from the approaching storm she seeks refuge inside. The palm reader is a diminutive woman who reluctantly read the young lady's palm. She's learns from her reading that she's a descendant in the long line of witches just like herself. After learning that she'll be a witch with great powers after her 16th birthday, the woman takes her under her wing. Can she master her powers and make her dreams come true?

Overall the movie isn't all that great. In fact you'll feel kind of silly watching this teenage tripe. The movie has no real message and the supernatural angle is quite lame. When I saw this the first time I hoped something bad would happen to Robin Lively, but it never came to fruition. Oh well, if you really dig 80's movies, this one's for you. Others need not to apply.

    Fair.

I think what makes Teen Witch one of the best 80s "makeover" movie, is that it deals with issues not let on to seriously yet it still touches the heart.

It seems that everyone wants to be "Cinderella." In this story, a teenage girl who feels invisible at her school wants to be the most popular girl at school. After obtaining witch powers, her adventure begins in finding herself.

We all know that this movie is very fiction, but along with all this hocus pocus, comes a certain message. This message being that no matter what you do to change yourself, the real truth and comfort you'll receive comes from your true individual character and that is how you will succeed and will be truly satisfied.

I enjoyed the "musical" parts of the movie, I think they blended it in very well. Lively was very natural in her role and I liked that. Overall I give this movie a 9+, for a movie that isn't meant to be an Oscar worthy one and is made just for pure enjoyment.

Teen Witch is a fantastic example of an 80's teen flick. Growing up in the eighties was a lot of fun because there were films like this!. Yes, they can be predictable at times, and if scrutinised carefully there are some glaring errors. eg. If Kiki broke her leg during play rehearsal, then how come she was fine by the time of the school prom? Not that much time had passed. But who cares. This is a film you should take at face value, the music is boppy, the clothes are typically late eighties and most importantly the characters are likeable. I especially liked her best friend- she was great, and she appeared in what I think is the most memorable part of the film. The "top that" scene. Why don't they make more films like this? They are perfect for the teen market and are, in my opinion better than the likes of Sabrina the teenage witch. At least Teen Witch has some underlying moral messages which we should all remember once in a while. All in all a lightweight but entertaining film.

This is THE CHEESIEST '80s movie you will EVER see and that's why it's so fun to watch. I mean, it's just horrible! Especially that way cool "I like boys!" song. And who can forget Kiki singing "Top that, top that..." All I can say is that if you're bored and this movie comes on the Disney channel, get ready to laugh hysterically and be glad the'80s are over.

I thought the rap battle was the highlight of the film. The movie and characters treat the horrible white rappers so seriously that I just bust out laughing. This is not a quality film, but it is a fun film to ridicule, if you enjoy that sort of thing.

ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE!!!! OK so I usually fall for the cheesy ones, especially those of the wonderful 80s, but I really do love this one. If only it wasn't so dang hard to find!!! No movie rental places have it and the only luck I have found is on EBay, and I am scared of that thing!!!! I think the songs are hilarious and I feel like I can really relate to Louise as a teenager who wants the cute guy!!! It is surprising how many people have actually seen this movie (usually because it is played on TV every once in a while, but still it is amusing. If you haven't seen it, and like the cheesy kinds of movies of the 80s, find it, sit down, and ENJOY! Invite me too!

I was expecting a bit more, from the reviews I read. My public library recently got this on DVD, a pretty good transfer for an old (1989) movie, with only one extra, the trailer for this movie.

Robyn Lively is the lead actor in the role of Louise Miller, who we quickly find out is a sort of geek, having skipped a grade and now a senior. She secretly longs for Brad Powell (Dan Gauthier), star football player who is dating the school's most popular girl. A very familiar premise in teen movies.

This one has a twist when Louise finds out from a little old fortune teller that she has latent powers and at her 16th birthday, just a couple of days away, her powers will be manifest. (Lively really was 16 during filming, although Gauthier was in his mid-20s.) Anyway, Louise gains the ability to work magic. In one episode she gets back at her mean English teacher with a voo-doo doll. In another she turns her bothersome brother into a small dog, but he changes back when she dunks him in the bathwater. But her best trick is to arrange it so that everyone likes her, and she becomes the most popular girl at school. Alas, she realizes that this only brings temporary gratification, and in the long run, it is better just to be yourself.

Somewhat entertaining, but it could have been so much better. It is interesting that none of the young actors, 17 years later, are recognizable. A few had ongoing careers in TV supporting roles. It just illustrates how difficult it is to become a movie star.

Teen Witch is a lot of things, but very few refer to it as a truly good movie. In reality, it is a very bad movie. However, it is one of those truly bad movies that is so bad that it comes full circle and becomes good again.

The plot is your basic teen fantasy/comedy. Louise (Lively) is an unpopular girl at her high school. She desperately pines for the most popular guy in school, while being snubbed by nearly everyone and harassed by her evil professor. Her home life is not much better, her parents are nice, but dim and she has an annoying younger brother. One day Louise discovers she is descended from a long line of witches and proceeds to use her newfound powers to change her circumstances. The predictable thing happens, Louise gets popular, ends up alienating her one true friend, gets the guy and in the end decides to just be herself.

What sets this movie apart is that it is not a musical per se, but includes a large amount of musical numbers set to generally catchy songs. Often these numbers will come out of nowhere, have odd choreography and add little to the plot. The stand out number in this movie would be a song called "Top That", which involves Louise's nerdy best friend getting into a rap off with a boy she likes. It really has to be seen to be believed.

I thought Teen Witch was a fun, cute, comedy that is great for kids and teenagers alike. I think it also may have helped my personal rating because it was an 80's film, and I love the 80's. I used to watch it all the time as a kid, but then they stopped playing it, but just about a week ago I saw it on ABC Family, and I was so happy to get to watch it again. The movie also contained fun and upbeat music to listen to throughout the film. Plus you have got to just love their outfits in the movie, they were so colorful and "out there". I love the part in the movie when Louise make the voodoo doll that matches her teacher. I have to admit though Louises younger brother really freaks me out, but hey the movies still a classic!

A true eighties teen comedy, but not the best film ever made. If you have watched this film then I'm sure the same bits stick in the memory - The 'Top That' Rap-Off, The cheesy (No, really cheesy) 'I like boys' shower-room scene, and my favourite the 'I can't talk to him, look how funky he is' quote, directed at a boy wearing the sort of clothes that make you cringe when you see them in old photos, the sort of kid that wore fluorescent pink socks to school... The scenes involving her brother are hilarious and provide most of the deliberately funny moments.

I think any movie where a month down the line you can still remember sketches and quotes is worth watching and this is certainly one of those. Watch it and I guarantee that you'll laugh when you're supposed to...and even more when you're not.

    I give it a cheesetastic 8/10.

This movie has no redeeming values. It could possibly be one of the worst movies of all time. Worst acting, worst script, and oh my god, an embarrassment on all the actors resume. At the same time it's freaking irresistible. You have to surrender to the crap fest that this movie is, and then you end up loving it for all it's horriblines... of course the musical numbers are awful, and while watching, I actually feel embarrassed for them... but then I laugh, and then I make fun, ohhh, and what a glorious time you can have watching this awful piece of...

This movie is so bad, but made out to be so serious that it made me almost pee my pants! The highlight of the movie is the rap-off scene between Kiki and her crush who's "too funky" for her to talk to. "Top That" had me rolling! The cheesy lighthouse scene was equally as bad, as is the opening scene in Louise's dream on the roof! I even downloaded "Most Popular Girl" for memories, when the movie stopped being played on the Disney Channel. The acting is subpar, and so is the plot, but its so unintentionally funny that it rocks! This is a fun movie to watch and make fun of, but not to take seriously, or you'll only be disappointed! A good movie to watch with friends who want to reminisce about the 80s.

With Teen Witch, you can get your friends together who want to get a dose of the 80s - an elephant-size heroin injection of the 80s, complete with Madonna-ripoff soundtrack and single-pig-tail and spandex - and get quite a good many laughs at its expense. Or sometimes with it, but very rarely. It's a film with the intent to put forth the old and very tired cliché: a girl who can't fit in will do stuff to make herself fit in really big, only to discover, color us shocked, that it's really best to just be yourself, maybe, if you're good enough as is. That's the most of a moral I could get out of it anyway. Oh, and if you're a high school girl, the quarterback is always a Tom Cruise clone, I guess, only a little more buff and less creepy.

But man-o-man, get ready for cheese here. And sometimes some weird surprises in the cast. Such as Shelly Berman (who some might recall as Larry David's father on Curb Your Enthusiasm) in a bad hairpiece as the most incomprehensibly bad and nosy teacher ever who gets his just desserts (or too much thereof) with a mojo-doll mock-up of himself by Louise Miller. Or Marcia Wallace basically doing a start-up version of her Mrs. Krabappel character on the Simpsons only as a drama teacher. Or even Dick Sergeant as the father of the household. Best of all is little old Zelda Rubinstein, the perennial little old lady in movies, who is perfect as the mentor witch to Robin Lively's Louise, giving sage advice and sometimes just doing silly things like making cute guys out of frogs. Yeah, one of those old-lady witches.

So, what to expect? Lots of random musical segments, usually complimented by a boombox or stereo nearby, with songs like "I LIKE BOYS!" in a girl's locker room, or with the really shockingly dated and howlingly funny white-guy rapping on the street that becomes a rap-off with Louise's possessed best friend. Oh, and lots of montages, and cruel jokes, and a very stereotypical mean-little brother of Louise's who may in fact be playing it too gay for a kid of pre-pubescent age. And a final prom scene that reeks of silliness and oddly timed romance. And did I mention the 1980's? Be warned, this is so unabashedly of its time and era and locked-in-John-Hughes mode of thought that you'll wonder if it's still the 21st century by the time it ends. Guilty pleasure.

Teen Witch rocked! The first time I saw it was when a foster child at my mothers foster home brought it with her things. We watched that movie everyday. The movie is pure cheese, but that is what makes it fun. The songs are like singing along with that bouncy ball on mighty mouse episodes. Robyn Lively is plays Louise perfect, and one of the popular girls (Sean) was in Can't buy me love! Two weird things about the movie were how her brother was always like grunting when he talked, and Louise had an obsession with saying Brad's name. Later Kiki

I thought this movie was excellent. Robin Lively and Dan Gauthier have excellent chemistry together and make a great team. The way Robin Lively portrayed a misfit in school at the beginning and then the most popular girl in school was wonderful. She was simply amazing in the role of the girl who wanted to fit in, but found out fitting in isn't always the most important thing in high school.

I grew up in the 80s. I'm 29 years old today and I turned 14 in 1989 during the year this silly, campy film came out. I don't remember this movie coming out in the theaters or at Blockbuster Video back in 1989. In fact I had never heard of it and Robyn Lively (she was a great low grade late 80s teen star) is the only recognizable name here for me. I caught it on TV recently and it was like watching a train wreck that I couldn't take my eyes off of. This film about a teen witch played by the lovely Robyn Lively seems like a real caricature of the 80s, and doesn't capture the late 80s well at all. I was embarrassed as hell watching this cheesy flick. The movie looks like it was filmed earlier then 1989, like perhaps 1986 or 1987. Who the hell was still wearing those cheesy bandannas in 1989? Yuck. The loud and campy fashions are atrocious here. Why is it that I'll watch some kid movies from the late 80s and it gels from how I remember it generally being in real life during the actual 80s like The Wizard, Big, License to Drive, and the great The Lost Boys? Even the TV shows I remember from back then got it right like Full House and Growing Pains. But then I'll watch something like Teen Witch and just think, "WTF were we thinking walking around dressed like that?" A lot of the more gaudy pre-1995 fashions leave that taste in my mouth.

Forget the stupid plot of this film, just sit back and have a good laugh by looking at the some of worst of the 80s. The garish fashions are just gross, and you'll feel the need to take a bath after a Teen Witch viewing.

    3/10

This movie is a must see 80's film. Joshua Miller turns in one of the foremost examples of excellence in acting ever captured on celluloid. He acts circles around Robyn Lively and the rest of the cast. The film is not a masterpiece, but his scenes are worth sitting through the weakest of cheesy scenes. Zelda Rubinstein also turns in a noteworthy performance.

teen witch is the 80s classic about louise, a shy misfit with typical teenage girl problems: the boy she loves doesn't know she's alive, her parents are washed-up sitcom actors, and senior boys rap in front of her locker! then louise discovers she has magic powers and that's just the beginning...

OK, the acting is horrible, the plot makes no sense, and random characters burst into song, but seriously i love this movie with all my heart. i would give anything for a continuous loop of it in my head. it always makes me crack up every time. this movie has a lot to offer. great music, big hair, green heels and orange socks over pink leggings. so if you haven't seen it, you're missing out.

and remember...the real magic is believing in yourself

Richie is such a pig and i love when Serena makes her weird foods.

"Louise, i brought your morning pa-pa', i took the liberty of ironing your home-work'!" Ahh... the immortal words of Louise's crazy looking little brother, what an amazing leap for the world of cinema. I am in awe each time i watch this dazzling film. Be it the A-mazing rap sequence or just the HI-larious teacher in the car wash/voodoo doll sequence i cannot get enough of teen witch...but i must say the only flaw in the film is the incredible standard that all of my boyfriends have been held to since the scene in the abandoned house where Brad stands in his tank top daring Louise to "catch" him. well what can i say. this is a no-brainer, peace out dudes.
