Short summary
A young man lives and learns while growing up on the street and in and out of correctional facilities.
Film was originally intended to be a full-fledged musical, but this tested poorly with audiences, so most of the musical numbers - except the most essential to the story - were cut. This helps explain the mysterious appearance of Elvis Costello in two roles in which he does very little.
The feature film debut of R&B singer Mary J. Blige.
Insane Clown Posse member Violent J was offered a role as a prison guard, which he would have had to perform without his trademark facepaint. However, Violent J refused the role because he did not want to play a racist character.
The group home that Elijah lives in as an adult is in The Bronx. The address is 1464 Southern Blvd. and it is located across the street from The Plaza De Castillo.
