On the night of the premiere of Mashaal, Anil Kapoor signed Feroz Khan's " Jaanbaz" and Subhash Ghai's " Mere Jung".
The role of Raja was written with Amitabh Bachchan in mind. Also, it was first offered to Kamal Hassan before Javed Akhtar recommended Anil Kapoor.
Sunny Deol was considered for the role of Raja, but Dharmendra thought it was too early for Sunny to work with Dilip Kumar.

The film was based on the well-known Marathi play Ashroonchi Zhali Phule written by famous Marathi writer Vasant Kanetkar.
A film called "Aansoo Ban Gaye Phool" based on the same Marathi play (but presented in a different manner) was released in 1969 which was directed by Satyen Bose. It starred Ashok Kumar, Debu Mukherji and Pran in key roles.

The Holi song in MASHAAL (1984), "Holi Aayi Re" was based on Hridaynath Mangeshkar's Marathi song in JAIT RE JAIT (1977) which also has got traces in the original Punjabi folk tune used in SHAGOON (1964) as "Gori Sasural Chali".
There were several stories doing the rounds that Anil Kapoor did the film for free. He stated after Rachna and Ek Baar Kaho,he was in no position to discuss money with Yash Chopra and Sawan Kumar Tak. But Yash did offer him money.
